The next day in The Dungeon, Adara handed the invite to the biggest standout of her and Emilia’s current crop of prospective fighters.

“Who’s gonna tell me to shut up now?!” was a familiar line out of Rose’s mouth whenever a peer or trainer had tried putting her in her place, usually unsuccessfully as the prospect had the natural talent to back up her ego. Adara was one of the few who had her respect, the veteran fighter able to tactfully rein Rose in whenever her behavior threatened to disrupt class and physical ed. The youth was becoming more unruly, however, and most recently had knocked Adara out during a sparring session; albeit an anything-goes sparring session, when Rose unleashed her own self-taught maneuver on the unsuspecting instructor.

“Too cool, Adara!” Rose exclaimed. “After last class, I totally expected to still be in the doghouse! This is what I get for whipping you in a fight?!”

“That was training,” Adara corrected. “And the progress you’ve been making tells me this is the right step for you to take next.”

“I’m still sorry I knocked you out, teach,” Rose offered. “But don’t worry ‘cause, after everyone sees me in action, it won’t be as embarrassing for you!”

“No time like the present to get you ready for that action,” Adara directed. “I can attest to your striking power, so we’ll practice groundwork today.”

Rose groaned. “Do I gotta, Adara?! You know that’s not my jam! And didn’t Master Lee say that he wasn’t afraid of someone who practiced a thousand kicks once, but someone who practiced one kick a thousand times?”

“Ten thousand,” Adara corrected. “He also said to be like water. Adaptability means getting out of your comfort zone.”

“I’m always in the zone!” Rose boasted. “If I’m good enough to beat you, Adara, maybe I need to go a round with The Empress before getting to the tournament?”
