Description Work has been going pretty slow, so I managed to sneak in a li'l sketch of Sam in one of her "playful" moods. I thought I'd share with ya again how I do the tight pencilwork which many people still mistake for an inked artwork.

On the left is the breakdown, which is basically a more defined sketch. I avoid doing very rough sketches because it looks messy and it's very hard for me to clean up. This was drawn with an F pencil(which I darkened a bit in Photoshop so ya guys can see it). In the middle is the finished rendered sketch, note that this is where I put all the blacks and define the highlights. And finally, on the right is the artwork darkened in Photoshop(done by adjusting the levels).

I also wanted to show ya guys how you can emphasize the body's shape(and curves ) by using folds and wrinkles. (no spandex required! )

I have no idea why but I love finished lines right before they get inked. Whether it's my own work or some one elses, that part of the procces always looks the most "atractive", am I right?

What pencil(s) do you recommend for tight penciling? Kinda like these:[link]

Any kind of soft lead will do, I started with HB and moved on to 2B. The darker you go the softer the lead gets, so go for something in the middle. It doesn't matter if its a regular or a mechanical pencil as long as it's dark enough, you're good to go.

Thanks.... but...

But then the softer it is, the messier, right? Then the lead would just spread and I have to pencil them again....

Which is why you pick something just around the middle. Too hard and the lines will be too gray and light, try starting with HB and see if that works for you. Also, I try to be careful by covering finished areas so they wont get smudged. ^^

Thanks.
Covering the smudged ares.... and then they transfer/imprint to the cover, LOL.

do you go straight to breakdown or are there steps before that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

batangbatugan In reply to SuperMichaelMan [2009-02-23 06:12:37 +0000 UTC]

Well the initial sketching and the breakdown are pretty much the same, I just erase the unecessary lines(it's much easier to do at this stage)

Very Very Very nice penciling work. I'll admit. I was fooled into thinking that all of your work was inked as well, until I really started looking at how not a single line was different from the pencils (and then read the note that came with this piece ). Great work, and one heck of an awesome gallery.

Thank you! ^___^ You're doing great as well.

Hehe, I love pencilwork but I can't resist darkening it a bit when it gets scanned and becomes digital, since I can't ink.
