Description
I always think of Ant-Man more as a team-player than a solo adventurer, but part of that could be I've never read any of the characters adventures, but know a good chunk about his history (Scott Lang was Ant-Man far longer than original Hank Pym--probably best known for his Yellowjacket/Giant-Man/Goliath personas--was) so make of that what you will. That said, I think its interesting that Marvel Studios is taking a larger risk with Ant-Man as their next upcoming feature to kickoff the third "Phase" in their Marvel Cinematic Universe. On paper everything sounds okay: the film is focusing on the Lang incarnation of the character, with Paul Rudd starring as, and features legendary actor Michael Douglas as Pym. Peyton Reed, best known for his comedies, is directing after taking the helm from Edgar Wright, which could mean the film will be a solid action comedy for the 120 minute span (Reed's films have bolstered mixed reviews but a quick look at what he's directed shows he is capable of handling decent product). But in reality the project has suffered a long tortured history that reached a denoument when Wright left over "creative differences" with Marvel Studios (rumored to be over squeezing his film to conform with the MCU style rather than standing on its own), with several of Wright's creative team leaving with him, almost grounding the project to a halt. While the film could likely be a success, it could be a case of being similar to Disney/Pixar's "Cars" where its still a success but nowhere near spoken of in the hushed tones that prior works (Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo in this example) are.
That said, Ant-Man is a fun character when in the team environment of the Avengers. Lang's characterization, as a good natured thief and electronics expert who only stole Pym's old Ant-Man equipment to save his daughter's life, has all the earmarks for being someone audiences can enjoy following. He's an everyman character, one far more enjoyable than Pym (very mentally unstable) or Ant-Man III Eric O'Grady (sleazy and seedy). When I finally opened my new Avengers Hawkeye I wasn't too pleased with the plastic bow and gave him the bow and accessories from the old Hawkeye, from Toy Biz's seventh Marvel Legends series. Thank goodness I saved at least some of his arrows, one of them being the tiny Ant-Man hanging on for dear life on the shaft. Creates an atmosphere of that 1970s fun I was going for.

Man, love your pics.
I don't think Ant-Man is going to be a huge success and I was just telling a friend today that I can see it being the first of these Marvel Movies not to get a sequel. Well, besides Hulk but he had two chances.

You're probably right. It'll be an enjoyable movie no doubt but it'll likely be on the same level as 2008's Incredible Hulk: decent and maybe even a good movie but won't warrant enough of a return to have a sequel.
That and Ant-Man's rogues gallery is nearly non-existent. After the villain version of Yellowjacket they'd likely have to revisit Pym's bad guys like Egghead and the Eraser, and that's digging alllllll the way back to the beginning of the 1960s for them.
