Okay, so what do you cast them with? I'm curious :'3

They're resin casts from silicone molds.Β I build them in paperclay and then make a mold from that. :3Β Most of these are non-pressurized casts... but now I use a pressure pot and I get a much cleaner result without bubbles.

I've had this doll in my mind for so long and I have been trying to make her, but I've had a hard time so far. You make amazing dolls so I was trying to learn some techniques as such.Β

Thanks!Β it's a pressure pot that was originally designed for spray painting.Β The pressure cooking ones I don't think will work because you don't want to introduce water into resin.Β Any kind of moisture in the resin will cause it to foam.Β It's fine to cast without pressurizing the resin, you just get more pin holes and bubbles.
Anyway! Paperclay is basically really super fine paper mache.Β You can make it yourself, but i like to get the premade stuff because it's really smooth.Β you can throw on the clay, let it dry, then carve and sand into it to create your sculpt.Β It's not a strong substance, but I use it because sanding it is fast and easy.Β

Joints are hard!Β I get intimidated every time I go to make one.Β My advice is to just do it and learn as you go.Β It's a hands on kind of thing and something that it's easier to learn when you feel what's /not/ right in comparison to what /is/ right.Β The only practical advice I can give is that it's best to try and make the slots for the string in the ball part slot shaped, not round, and about the size of the elastic you intend to use(too small and it won't fit.Β too large and it'll wobble).Β But make the socket hole round, larger than the string you want to use, and in the center or slightly further back from the center of the socket.
