Description I injected clear, undyed Task 9 resin into the hand mold, then I colored and added a shit ton of mica powder to the rest of the resin and injected more resin into the mold. It shot resin pretty high, but i was expecting that! In person these look really sweet. It looks like a star field inside the hands. I wish it hadn't leaked into the finger tips as much as it did, but I'm pretty satisfied. I might do a whole doll like this... but larger parts, like the stomach, might not turn out well. Plus I don't have enough task 9 for this atm.

Would it be possible to do this and make them glow in the dark? How cool would that be?

the problem with glow in the dark pigment is that it can't have UV stabilizer in the resin.  I don't know how UV stable the clear resin is, it might yellow quite a bit.  Plus the GID pigment is a powder that makes it opaque.  It's neat stuff and I've used it for other fun things, but with dolls I always worry about the permanency of the color.  Someone messaged me recently to say they had come into ownership of some of the doll busts(for resting misc heads on) and it was banana yellow.  It was made only seven years ago!  X3;;;

Oh wow!

Well I guess painting with glow in the dark paint would work better. Then you could make what you wanted on the resin.

It would be awesome if you did the body as the dark, and have him (or her) fade out to clear down the extremities.

I want to try that, but I don't know if I can control the discoloration that well.  We'll see!  I'm going to distill my resin into a few more containers and we'll see. XD

What does distillation do if you don't mind me asking?

I pour my resin into a different container, then I can color each batch and have a prec-colored resin to cast with, but I still have my uncolored resin to cast other colors in.

This is majorly cool, I would buy just the hands for an art piece. Just to sit there and admire.

I really love the clear fingertips, I think it's a pretty cool effect Literally the universe in their hands

That looks great :d Here's a suggestion, might try to add just a little of the mica induced resin into the clear resin's "top" surface and stir it up some enough to produce a blended "fade" and just gradually keep adding more on top of that till it get more into the solid coloring and just inject the rest as normal :3 that would probably give less of that solid clump between the two (unless that's what you're going for ^^)

that's actually what I sort of did, but I think the resin with dye and more mica powder in it is heavier and sunk lower over the course of the set.

Ah I see, yeah I can see that happening and would be tricky Maybe if the clear was given an almost equal amount of a silvery mica powder to help it balance out by being more dense? Although, I wonder how this would've turned out if it was reversed XD

If I may suggest? A clear resin with tiny beads inside.

batchix In reply to Knocks28 [2013-05-11 04:36:34 +0000 UTC]

the beads are too heavy and will fall to the finger tips. I can't use real glitter for the same resin. The mica powder is light enough that it floats in the middle. for flat things I can do a layer of resin, then put glitter resin, then layer resin, then glitter resin, but for complex molds like hands that won't work.

Ah, ok.

Some people I know who do custom M.U.S.C.L.E figures (toy from the '80's) experiment with plastics too. One of them had a mold large enough to embed things in it and it was pretty cool.

I think it works better with polyester resins, like castin craft? But i'm not sure. the smell of the castin craft kind of makes me light headed and it's not as strong as the urethane, so I don't use it. Also, I seem to have more of an allergy to it than even the smooth on stuff.

Honestly, I'm not sure of the plastic they use for the toys. But, please, be safe!
