This is PERFECT.
Thank you! *_*

Oh god, why I'm so obsessed with turians? :ยฐD Especially with Garrus, of course... AWWWW *รง*

Again, thank you now is more easy to imagine turians' body ^_^

I actually like the model here actually. It makes a whole lot of sense for the Turian body to function without flunking out on some parts of the body

Oh my... ^_ ^ I REALLY like this!!!

HOT!!! DDD

Finally, a nice interpretation of a turian body!

I am posting this on the turian appreciation group on facebook!

I was always disappointed with the "offical" turian concept art. Maybe Bioware can take a hint from this I'll imagine Garrus looking this way from now on.

I did send it in to the fan-art contest at SDCC but i don't think I got in. I also sent the pin-up to one of their social network people who said it was so close to NSFW that she couldn't NOT put it up in her cube. XD;;; I'd be floored if they even saw it.

I am curious, I am always seeing sculptures with closed mouths and and in this case the mandibles are attatched to the side of the head. I do not know if you plan on animating this but I am curious as to what the next step is to prep these particular parts of the mesh for animation, i.e. Making the inside of the mouth and separating the mandibles. Sorry, I have not really done much sculpting.

Couldn't you just texture it in Zbrush?

I know you can do that in Sculptris.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to Bone-Butterfly [2010-10-04 04:09:34 +0000 UTC]

you can, but honestly i don't think i can get the level of detail i want by painting it that way. I have more experience doing flat textures, especially because i like to drop in the textures of real world items.

Sorry for chiming in on an old thread, but have you tried using Projection Master? Not as easy as painting on a tidily unwrapped model but it might fit your preferences.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to GunnerRomantic [2010-10-12 04:01:45 +0000 UTC]

i haven't... but i don't know how to do that either. :S i'm juuuuuust learning zbrush. a lot of the tutorials i've used are great, but sometimes they leave out big important things. ._.;; and that's when i get stuck.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

GunnerRomantic In reply to batchix [2010-10-12 06:44:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... hunting for tutorials demands as much time as actually practicing when it comes to this program.

You picked up the sculpting bit of it fast enough--polypainting will come naturally to you too, I bet. Give it a shot sometime. :v

Bone-Butterfly In reply to batchix [2010-10-04 13:39:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. Hopefully it doesn't have too many polygons on it. You know, you could do it like a Normal map.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to Bone-Butterfly [2010-10-04 18:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I think there's a way to reduce the polys to re-simplify it? I'm not sure. Man, Max used to have a function called "simplify" I think? It would auto reduce stuff. unfortunately it's gone now. =____=;;;

Wonderful, this is the kind of modeling I need to do with my Raloi concept. I'm not sure how to get started, any tips or tutorials? But this is fantastic, I always felt the the "official" concept was too obscure, yours makes logical sense. Those are the same basic principals I based the raloi off of.

for learning the basics of zbrush, i watched this vid: [link] for sculpting in general, i studied a lot of anatomy and have sculpted by hand for years. Having a block of decent modeling clay or even super sculpey to rough out ideas on is super helpful too. :3

MoonFaerieStudio [2010-09-24 10:28:38 +0000 UTC]

You should be able to pain directly on it if you can't unwrap it (I can't remember how to do that either ), otherwise i've used UVmapper to "spread" model out for texturing. It's a nice program that you can place the parts for texture around. Sometimes it's easy to flatten an object but sometimes.. not so

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to MoonFaerieStudio [2010-09-24 18:17:07 +0000 UTC]

ahhh cool. all the unwrapping i've done has been by hand. i don't want to unwrap something with that many polys by hand. XD

That's some kick-ass sculpting work!

Have you taken a look at this bit of concept art on turians? . I'm more partial to it, to be honest. Less human-like -> more alien -> more convincing.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to eilidh [2010-09-24 18:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I feel like that version doesn't look biologically possible. How does the collar bone work? They'd need one to have their arms work in a bipedal fashion. If they're bird-based wouldn't they have a pronounced keel bone and a reversed pelvis? Why would they develop shelved looking folds to their skin where stuff would get caught and cause infection? I realize it's an alien and you can just sort of make up stuff without ever explaining it- but the universe is so detailed that it seems odd. That concept looks like they just drew things that looked cool without thinking of function.

patronus-light In reply to batchix [2010-10-03 16:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Since it is concept art I wonder how far along it was in the process of making the turians. Obviously its near the end because that is pretty much how we know them in game, with the face and basic shapes of the body under armor and clothing, but who's to say that its the official version?

You did amazing work on your model. Its so detailed and the level of realism is fantastic. Nice work.

You have some very good arguments I hadn't thought about (except for stuff getting caught between folds, and some strange spikes here and there).

That's the problem with a lot of concept art: cool looks override functionality and plausibility. (I mean, think about it: what's up with the Asari essentially being blue hot chicks?)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

batchix In reply to eilidh [2010-09-24 18:59:31 +0000 UTC]

i always think of the asari as being the twi'leks of the mass effect universe. XD My husband's a concept artist and we have long drawn out conversations about design and functionality. He took some classes at a school in LA that concentrated on concept art and design, it was interesting the different schools of thought for different projects. D's very much a "it has to make sense" sort of designer and I am too. X3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eilidh In reply to batchix [2010-09-24 19:06:52 +0000 UTC]

I fully agree with that! Though it has to be said, making sense is sometimes limited by what we know.

One more reason to do research and background work.
