It's true. Tolkien was NOT a fan of the Santa cameo in Narnia. It was a major point of writer-geek tension between them.Otherwise they're BFFs.

One thing to remember, though, is that Narnia is also for Children. To have CHRISTmas at all in Narnia implies Christ, Saints, and Father Christmas. I liked the idea that he'd been trying to get in and that his arrival was a sign of Jadis's loss of power--an innocent, happy sign.

Oh no, I understand that completely. I did read the books when I was young, after all. I just recall Tolkien not being the biggest fan of this particular plot point. XD

XDDDD This is too good. I've always enjoyed reading about the interactions among the Inklings.
For example, the Tolkien reading where one of them burst out with, "Oh, f***, not another elf!"

Well, technically, no. I vaguely remember it being something along the lines of Lewis' lack of subtlety, and the simplistic, childish tone, and... well, lots of things. I used to read books on their relationship (I was a dork) but it's been years and years since then, and I'm rusty. Can't deny he was still somewhat supportive of Lewis' writing, though, in a colleague-ish way. But I definitely remember Santa being the big sticking point.
(Frankly, I agree with Tolkien--the arrival of Santa threw me for a loop. Then again, I read D.W. Jones before I read Lewis, and I was biased with the influence of fabulous writing already.)
Don't think I could have stuffed all that in four panels, though! XD
