Problem Solved

It sounds funny because the God debate is often portrayed as such a profound and insoluble riddle. But if you actually do Google it, you’ll find plenty of articles about untestable hypotheses, anecdotal evidence, Ockham’s Razor, and other useful info about how to evaluate claims, as well as info about evolution, cosmology, particle physics, and other relevant subjects. (I’ve even written a few myself.) Sure, you’ll also find websites like Answers in Genesis, but if you read everything that’s available, you’ll understand why it’s not called Correct Answers in Genesis.

So if anybody asks you why it’s irrational to believe in God, you can just tell them to Google it. And if they accuse you of naively oversimplifying a complex issue, just direct them here.

Examples of useful info that can be found by anyone who is genuinely inquisitive:

Oh well I mean come on now, some kids putting that kind of thing on the web is hardly the same as an actual article online. That's not the internet lying, that's children. Like I could post on facebook or something "Hey guess what, I'm actually a unicorn!" That's not the internet lying, that's me joking around on the internet, big difference.

loool I tried to explain that to my parents as a reason not to go to church, and they were like.
' So what. God hates you now for saying that. '

at church...

" Children! God Loves every one of you, no matter whatever sins you've committed! "

TiffanySketches In reply to awdrie [2012-06-10 05:50:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm a Christian (Universalist) and there is ALOT wrong with how churches are run and how they operate. The topic of hell particularly irks me, it's a poison to the entire religion. It contradicts EVERYTHING in the bible, and EVERYTHING Jesus ever stood for. The fact that people throw that term around is appalling.

It's a money making scheme invented by the churches to get people in the pews and donating money. Think about it, if you were told God loved you no matter what and you would still go to heaven regardless of your lifestyle because *gasp* Jesus already suffered so you wouldn't have to, how many people do you think would really show up and donate money? Hell is an amazing business investment, and I think on some level preachers know that.

It contradicts the bible because when Jesus died he had maybe a couple thousand followers out in the middle of a rock basically. There were still millions of people on the planet that didn't even know he existed, even countries or towns away even. When he said he died for mankind, I assume he meant mankind, not just a few thousand followers that managed to hear about him and believe in him. He either died for everyone's sins like he said and he is the son of God, or he didn't and he's not. Very simple.

I find it funny that people throw the term hell around for questioning the church when Jesus himself ran around causing chaos in the temples, calling the rabbis out, questioning their beliefs, and calling them hypocrites. Why do you think they wanted him crucified so badly? Jesus is the last person who would ever frown on a little rebellion, if anything people questioning the church and being angry with it are probably kindred spirits with him. If he were alive he'd encourage free thinking. I don't know when Christianity somehow became synonymous with complacency, but that was never encouraged in the bible, and it certainly wasn't shown by example from the man they're worshiping.

But most importantly there's the problem that the idea of hell only makes people fear punishment instead of embracing the bible's true teachings. These people limit their lifestyles, they stay away from experiences that they would otherwise enjoy with the only reason that they might be tortured in a fire for eternity. This makes people bitter, that other people can do something they can't. It's like watching someone having fun breaking the rules while you can't. Instead of acting on something because it's morally right or wrong, they do it simply to avoid eternal fire without thinking about WHY it's right or wrong. This makes them feel resentful they can't do it, then guilty for feeling that way, which makes them suppress angry feelings, and cling to the idea that if they're good they'll get special treatment when they die. You eventually get these angry bitter Christians that feel the need to force their religion down other's throats because as you know misery loves company, and if they should have to follow these restrictive rules, so should other people. You don't see happy well adjusted Christians getting up in your face about religion.

The whole tragedy of this is that if you took away hell, these people wouldn't be able to tell you why they're Christian. If you said that everyone, EVERYONE, even rapists and child molesters, get to heaven equally because that's what Jesus died for, they would be enraged feeling it's unfair. They'd be wondering why they had to follow all the rules and go to church. Which brings up the question, why are they? If you take hell out of the equation and can't answer why you're Christian maybe you should re-evaluate your faith and figure out what your religion really means to you, or if it's even the right religion for you. There's plenty of religions out there that can nurture your soul and help you find inner peace.

Anyway, sorry for the long rambling post, I don't even think it really relates to your post anymore. I drank some strong tea tonight.

lool, that's okay.
It's sorta related. I don't even remember what I said, so many people replied to it.
It makes sense that hell was created by the churches to scare people into money and etc.
People use 'Hell' way too casually. The used it in The Avengers and now little kids can't stop saying it -_-;; Even if they aren't the religion that has it or don't even know what it is.
haha, middle ages people.

DoodleMaus In reply to aroniense21 [2012-06-09 16:28:19 +0000 UTC]

Apology accepted, because the bible isn't "proof." It's a book of parables and stories about 2000 year old primitive politics and cultures. It was written by a bunch of monks in monasteries hundreds and hundreds of years AFTER the death of Christ. These people weren't even there to say hi to Jesus. And even then, they were plagiarizing off the Egyptian myth of Horus, who was also born of a virgin and had 12 disciples, etc etc etc. I'm not going to even list all the many similarities.

If you believe in the bible wholeheartedly you'd best get yourself some slaves and sell off your virgin daughters as well. The bible isn't meant to be taken as fact. People never realize this. They like to pick and choose the passages that suit them and ignore the rest.

"If you believe in the bible wholeheartedly you'd best get yourself some slaves and sell off your virgin daughters as well. The bible isn't meant to be taken as fact."
Precisely why I quoted the bible:
People often represent "god" as a loving father, nothing else.
However the old testament provides proof that he can love, hate, feel sorrow, in the end, he is as human as us (Making several assumptions that he exists, which I don't believe, but well....).

Ahhh, evil bible:
Yeah, in fact if we take it from a legal perspective he would make hitler look like a boy kicked out of the boy scouts because he couldn't tie a knot.
Making millions die, either from actions he took (like the flooding) or by omission when he knew they were happening (Like major wars or civilians deaths.)
And I love this quote:

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?

And he shouldn't be allowed to.

I think that what that person was trying to say was that the God in the Bible actually does hate things; they never insinuated that they believed in the Bible wholeheartedly.

I don't think the verse is being used as scientific proof, it's proof story-wise of God's character hating things. It's like saying, "In the story, Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf is evil because he eats Red Riding Hood's grandmother." I wouldn't take their comment so seriously.
