Description
"Sit down, Resa. Now, what did you want to talk to be about?""Ms. Alloway, it's... it's about Ingrid."
The woman shifted in her seat. "Ingrid?"
"Yes." The girl fidgeted in her seat.
"Is something wrong, dear?"
"I think so Ms. Alloway. Only, please don't tell me it was me who told you this because Ingrid would be awfully cross if she found out! I'm only doing this because I care about her and well I thought you'd be better to try to fix the problem, seeing as you are the school's counselor and all – Ingrid has said she wants to leave."
"Is Ingrid homesick?"
"No, I... she wants to kill herself, Ms. Alloway."
"Has she outright said so, Resa?"
"No... but... she talks about it a lot. Indirectly."
Ms. Alloway massaged her forehead. "Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Resa. When you return to the dormitory, could you please tell Ingrid to come see me? Oh! Ingrid, hello!"
Ingrid stared at them from the doorway, like a perplexed scientist who had just seen a green paramecium under a microscope when clearly all paramecia are blue or red. "Good evening, Ms. Alloway. I heard my name."
"Indeed, Ingrid, please take a seat here." The woman motioned to the seat on the sofa beside the trembling Resa. "Ingrid, Resa has come to me with some very... disturbing news."
"What might that news be, that it involves me?"
"She says you want to kill yourself."
Ingrid stared at her blankly. "Come again?"
"Resa says you've spoken about committing suicide."
The confused girl looked from Ms. Alloway to Resa, and then back again. "Ms. Alloway, I was just coming to tell you something important and, I believe, related to this whole situation –"
"It's good that you're looking for help, darling." Ms. Alloway grabbed Ingrid's shoulders and stared at her intently. "Help starts within oneself. Whatever it was that drove you to these thoughts, I'm certain that I can help and maybe –"
"Ms. Alloway!" Ingrid took the woman's hands and placed them back in her lap. "I wanted you to know that Resa, here, has read my writing notebooks."
"... And?"
"Those notebooks are filled with works of fiction."
"In which people commit suicide constantly!" protested Resa.
"Ms. Alloway," said Ingrid, turning exasperatedly. "That I write about gay couples does not mean I'm a lesbian. That I write about rape does not mean I've been raped. That I write about mental illness does not mean I've gone mad myself. And just because I write about suicide, that does not mean I plan to kill myself."
