Heck no! His death was unnecessary. He has like, what, ONE fight in Shippuden (vs himself), fast forward then, oop, time to kill him off.
If anything, Hiashi should have been the one to sacrifice his life for Neji (and by extension, Hinata and Naruto. Hiashi is of the main branch and saving Neji of the cadet branch LITERALLY breaks the cycle. Main branch lays down it's life for the cadet branch.Β Not only would this have MUCH more significance in the story, it would probably even propel Hinata and Neji to truly work together and change the clan with Naruto.Β
