Description
I got this idea for a worn and tired space traveler after reading "the tales for Pirx the pilot" by classic sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem. The shape of the helmet is inspired by "Commander Oddball" from "Revenge of the Sith". The face is based on my own face and I used Modos sculpting tools for the first time to tweak the mesh (for example pushing in the cheeks and pulling down the eye lids). I've textured the face using my own "skin". Don't worry, I'm not that pale and I don't have those dark areas under my eyes.Modeled and rendered in MODO

WoW!! I've always admired the folks who can render such things as this with such clarity, realism and skill. Thanks for sharing your work on dA for us to view it.
Were you formally trained how to do this? Is it something that could be learned?

Awesome picture, love the clone pilot helmet. Although he's a little pale, kinda creepy but other than that it looks amazing!
Have you thought of putting him in a starfighter cockpit?

When I added a comment to one of your works I had not seen the one here before! Damn! This IS my absolute hero Pirx the Pilot! Man! That;s absolutely wonderful visualization of the character I have ever seen! Congratulations! It would be great to see "haunted" Terminus talking ("TER-MI-NUS" ) ) to Pirx ! Well, I think that his face is a bit too nice and he seems to be quite handsome guy while from the lecture of "Tales..." we know that Pirx's physical appearance was not quite what is called "attractive" . Anyway - I am nicely suprised to see Pirx himself. Thx!

That is a very impressive piece of art. How did you do the scratches and chips in the helmet, or more precisely the damage above his left eye?

thanks - those are created by using a bump map. You can download the model and textures from my site if you want to check.

Although I've always wondered why those helmets have all that respiratory equipment on the chin if the mouth part is open...

I saw this on the modo forum, and I followed the WIP. I must say, Im very impressed! Really nice modeling, and especially texturing!
The skin could use some more work though, even if this isnt a skin shading exercise.
Best

Very nice work and normal maps I presume. The one crit I would have is the scratches on the helmet and the "mouth grill" look too clean and the same. They are too defined and look a little uncanny. Also on the mouth part the scratches havent revealed the metal underneith whereas they have general wear on the edges showing the metal, that might help break up those scratches a little. Also the texture on his left side of the helmet of the text is flipped the wrong way you'll either have to make a flipped texture for that side and Uv map it seperately or use decals for the text maybe? The helmet all looks a little plastic, though this maybe the effect you went for? Other than that its a stunning piece. The face is very well done, especially the eyes.

thank for taking the time and suggesting improvements. I'm just using bump maps, no normal maps. I agree about the scratches and will see if I can refine them. The texture is not flipped, the decals look as they should but maybe I should have made the text look more alien/futuristic and less mirrored.
