I think that was a Claymation commercial. They were very popular for about a decade, back in the 1980s to maybe early 90s.

For the most part mascots, as advertising have fallen out of favor, even the game consoles no longer sell by their mascots. I think only morning Cereals still use their mascots, if they have them.
