N stands for Nintendo. Besides being characters from their respective series, Megaman, Simon Belmont, and Pit were the N-Team in the old "Captain N: The Game Master" cartoon from the 80s, where the title character was a gamer from the real world who got sucked into an alternate dimension where video games were real. Cartoon Simon in particular didn't look at all like he does here and Cartoon Megaman was green, but I personally don't mind that the artist drew them as they should have been.
