Oh wow! Wonderful book and the illustrations are beautiful. I still need to buy a copy of PTO for myself instead of checking out of the library all the time lol. And it's nice to see an illustration of the Rat Catcher

AndrΓ© Castaigne did the pictures. The book was expensive, but worth it. It is the first version published in America, 1911.

That is the main problem, being in the UK, I doubt i'll obtain it over here and I can't be bothered spending all the effort and money trying to get it shipped.
Who knows, maybe one day i'll get lucky.

Good luck! I know there are only two prints of the UK original edition around anymore, so that probably won't happen.

Oh cool! I tried to find a book like that somewhere. I was trying to get new insight on characters, looks, all that. Do you know where I could maybe get a copy? And wonderful up close pics!

Awww~ You're lucky! Christine looks really pretty, Erik looks menacing, Raoul looks like a woman, and Nadir looks like a cross between a monky and a walrus... Anyway I'd love to have this book. Take good care of it!

That's what Nadir looks like! I kept looking at him, but I couldn't figure it out! I'm glad you like it!

Haha! It took me a while to figure it out too. He also looks like some kind of creepy Disney villan.

Is it in the original Leroux novel? (I know! It looks so nice )

Beansie In reply to heart-angel [2008-04-28 02:20:35 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it is the original English translation of Leroux The Phantom of the Opera. It is not the 1909 French version, but the 1911 English edition.

$220. It started at $40 but stupid people just would go and bid $50 on it and then totally leave it. I was the only bidder in the end, I wasn't bidding against anyone. I had told myself no more than $200 but...I didn't have a lot of self control ...it was worth every penny in the end and I'm certainly not going to sell it.
There have been publications that came out after this one with the same illustrations...I know I found the 1925 edition and I'm pretty sure that had pictures from the movie and this book....you'd have to look, but I hear they exist. The pictures are beautiful and you can see wear they got many of their ideas for the silent movie (though the scene with Christine fainting and being carried off is cut from the 1929 rerelease that almost everyone knows (I have a strange, 1925 version with about 15 minutes of extra footage later cut)) and the last one with Phillip's requiem, we only see Erik in that pose, not Christine.
Of course, I'm hoping that you've seen the silent Lon Chaney version to know what I'm talking about.

Oh wow. I'm sure it is worth every penny The illustrations are beautiful, as well as the book itself!
I have seen some of the Lon Chaney version, not the whole movie sadly..Though, I do wish to see the whole movie sometime. This sadly means I don't know exactly what your saying, but I have a faint idea.
That's cool how you can see where they took the idea's from.

The Lon Chaney version is in public domain and can be downloaded online free and legally...or watched on youtube because about four people posted the whole thing. It's not hard to find at all...someone posted it in yahoo videos, too.

I just looked up the prices for one of the first edition books like these. Most of them run for about $1,500.
Ouch.

You must be better at searching for bargains than I am. Haha! Still, I have found at least four copies that are over $1,000, and most other ones run from $200-$600.
I will be looking for the rare bargains that you mentioned. Until then, I'm content with my borrowed copy.

The art is amazing. The artist's name is Andre Castaigne. You can see a better shot of that picture here --> [link] I love Erik in that picture, too...I wish that maybe he had a little less of a nose, but other than that, it's great!

yes I looked him up on google, the art is amazing.
unfortunatly I dont have the original french version, just an English version of the original novel by Gaston Leroux. its nothing amazing, but I love the story anyway.

Beansie In reply to Delerium-K [2008-03-28 02:31:57 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it is!
Oh...I have this one, and two other English versions, one with the original translation from 1911 and the other with a new translation. The story is so wonderful, I read it from the other two books, too, anyway, because I'm too afraid to open up the old one too far...plus it kind of smells like my grandmother's attic and I'm not too fond of that smell personally. I know a lot of people like it and the smell of new books, too, but I personally enjoy my books more when they don't smell like anything...I guess...random.... Sorry about that!

haha, I know what you mean, though I dont really pay attention to the smell of books, I always get them from the library, so they could smell like anything. *tries not to wonder if the person who read my book last washed their hands* ew >.<
