Description
Thought by some to be the origin of all Pokemon, Mew contains the DNA of every Pokemon in existence (interestingly enough, he was also the very first Pokemon to be trademarked by Nintendo) and can thus learn every TM/HM in the game (excluding those that directly state only x-type may learn). So, even though his base stats may be lower than Mewtwo's he makes up for it through his flexibility. It is also one of two Pokemon that can transform and (in the anime) is notorious for messing around with pokemon and humans by transforming into them or legendaries. Mew was the only Pokemon in the first generation that could not be obtained legitimately (not counting missing no. as a pokemon) and had multiple ways of being obtained. Mew is also the basis for most of the 'chibi' legendaries that have come to be. (ex: celebi, jirachi, manaphy, etc...)
