I had to look through your work earlier today for inspiration. I dont know if it helped much yet Im suppose to do an interpretive self portrait for my application to Watkins, and it really just hasn't been working out at all. I dont know how to do self portraits -sigh-

With portraits, especially face portraits, you want to keep the focus on the person instead of the background. The only reason you would want a complex background is if it matches or makes the person look better for some reason. Otherwise something like a brick wall or a white fence is always fine.

Then also you should crop in as much as you can until something vital is being cut off. Because closer up is more detail being seen and therefore better.
