Description
Yay for managing to get a MerMay piece out there before MerMay is totally over! <'D I was worried about designing the background, considering I've never really worked with a water scene before, but I found a couple tutorials (shoutouts to RaykaLNova here on DA and Kitsune Zakuro on YouTube) that were super helpful. I think I may have gone just slightly overboard with the effects, but I'm really happy with the outcome regardless.
So Bayou is a shark-ish merman I adopted a couple years back or so through my old account. He's a lazy, chill lad who lives in the oceans of a small tourist planet with most of its land mass being water-based, and he likes to hang out by the shores to spook some people and sneak other people's snacks. Overall decent company to have, though he doesn't have very many friends of the humanoid, able to comprehend what he's saying nature and the other sharks definitely aren't a fan of him. Hence, one of his closest friends being a little colorful fish.
The piece itself started out as a very basic practice sketch of him looking at a fish (and my excuse for his tail being able to bend that way is that it's double jointed) that I did months ago. Most likely to see whether or not I could actually draw a merperson, as I don't draw them often, and the pose may have my first attempt of a picture of CosAce's OC Albi, which I failed at and decided to turn into something else. To be completely honest, I don't really remember but I think I was drawing them both around the same time. :'D Anyway, luckily I was reminded that MerMay exists via other artists posting (one more shoutout to Zerna as well for indirectly reminding me that I even had a mercharacter to draw and for low-key inspiring a more scenic piece than originally planned) and I decided to go all out and try some new stuff in the process.
Water and the shading that comes with it is super fun to do; I'd love to do more pieces with it.
