I've been trying to SaTaNiA's tutorial but it doesn't always give me a fractal... mystery! I'll keep trying.

Yes, crackle is fun if you can get it in the right places. I enjoy Apo. but it's very quirky and sometimes hard to tame. Be sure to watch your gradient, sometimes the fractal is there but you can't see it because the gradient is to dark.

I also find it hard to put a gradient into a new fractal. Often they will stay one plain colour and I have to transfer them to Chaotica to tweak some in.
