Well, that depends on their intent. If they're strictly cultural, they can be adjusted without harm. But if they're based on the inherent strengths found in the majority of each sex, it's better to stick to them. For instance, women tend to be natural nurturers and administrators/coordinators, so they choose careers that use those skills. Men tend to be natural disciplinarians and action leaders, so they prefer careers using those strengths. Now, that's not set in stone for each individual, but it does represent a significant majority.

As someone who probably never wants to have children and wants to be a leader/conservation biologist, I have to object to that. Did you know that men are way more likely to be encouraged in math/science subjects and hired in STEM fields than women with the same potential and/or skills are because men are thought of as more intelligent? And did you know that because women are thought of as "the nurturing ones," they are much less likely to be hired in ANY job because they're expected to be at home taking care of kids/cleaning, and men are much less likely to gain custody of their children because the mother is the supposed "better parent"? And in a study done where they had a conductor choosing musicians in an orchestra audition, the number of women chosen shot up when the conductor couldn't see who he/she was choosing to be in the orchestra, and the number of women chosen shot up even more when the conductor couldn't hear the auditioners walking down the isle to their seats because the conductors could hear the footsteps and were able to tell whether or not the auditioner was male or female.
Gender roles are generally bad things. I suggest we make them abstract and only focus on individual potential/skills/etc.
