Why do you keep coming back for me?For a pony so close to my heart; what else can I do?
Erk, I did not plan this through at all. I wanted a comic strip without words but couldn't find something that implies "a massive war happened at around panel 7 where Sunset Shimmer steps in and helps fight" but ended up implying that Sunset fought Celestia.

You could have had Twilight and Sunset charging into battle side by side against the enemy. That would have lost the motif of having Celestia sitting center-frame in every panel, but it might have been worth it.

When she realizes the futility of the life she leads until that moment and start actually trying to understand friendship like Twilight Sparkle?

The irony being, that EVEN WITH TWILIHT AS AN ALICORN, Sunset was still more powerful than Twilight, or that's how I saw it. But she still didn't become the Element of Magic.
First it's implied that Sunset was more or less Twilight's immediate processor. Since she was Celestia's student 'not long before Twilight.'
Celestia's dialogue suggests it was Sunset's frustration with her progress not proceeding as quickly as she wished that caused Sunset to fall from grace (TURNING cruel and dishonest rather than starting out that way).
Also, Celestia says she genuinely tried to help Sunset through this, but she chose to ABANDON her studies and pursue her own path.
IMHO, her tone suggests she genuinely loved Sunset before this.
And Celestia saying she never gave up hope of Sunset returning to her.

There is one more thing to take into account. Sunset is incredibly powerful, unnaturally so. The one unicorn that comes close to her power is Twilight.
Now, let's take a moment to analyze how others viewed Twilight (at least from some of the points of views we see in the past you showed in the stories). Twilight was viewed by others as a freak, a young unicorn that had too much powerful, and there were even some that had the suggestion of removing her horn or she would be a danger to herself and others. The only containment that Twilight had was her family, and Celestia herself.
We know little of how Sunset got her cutie mark, or how Celestia found out about her. But if she was more powerful than Twilight, we can guess that she encountered a similar reaction. Did she have a family, or was Celestia her only containment? If so how did she cope with the fact that others saw her as a freak of nature for being so powerful?

No, but Twilight was still aware of what they thought about her, and that must have affected her somewhat, again she had her family for emotional containment.
But what about Sunset? How did she "cope" with her incredible power, and what others saw her as?

Sunset might have been seen as the chosen one, and abused the positioned.Β

That's an interesting approach.
But that also would imply that Celestia made her intentions known about Sunset's task as her student. (Being the bearer of the Element of Magic and helping save Princess Luna).
If that was the case, then it could also explain a reason behind Sunset's rebellious attitude: She didn't want to be a tool, or have her purpose chosen for her. She wanted to be master of her own destiny.
Also, it would explain why Celestia always kept Twilight in the dark regarding her intentions, to the point of "ignoring" Twilight's warnings about the return of Nightmare Moon, or telling her to "go make some friends".
Her experience as a teacher of Sunset Shimmer must have had an effect on Celestia as well, not only as a teacher but as a leader as well.
What not a single story I've read so far about Sunset Shimer talks about is how Sunset Shimmer earned her cutie mark, or what it means. (It being a sun would also help in her to see herself as nothing but "Celestia's tool" and wanting to get away from that. Misinterpreting what it means, like other ponies sometimes do.)

Well, the prequel comic seems to imply she was always a bit vain even before the Mirror. As for going outright cruel and dishonest, well, what can I say?Β
Princess Celestia had tried to help, but she had also made the mistake of notΒ fullyΒ explain reasons for some of her actions Β (e.g. why she prohibit some areas of research from Sunset, why Sunset seeking Alicornhood her way won't work, etc.).
Either that or Sunset doesn't or refuses to listen.
She does genuinely love Sunset, yes, from what I gather. I really hope they try bringing her back to Equestria some day for a good-old-fashion redemption story.Β

Because she's arrogant and prideful. She believes she had all the top qualities and supreme talent, and wants to be recognize for that.
Which is why she feels entitled to everything, but feels she needs to work for her teacher's love; because she THINKS her teacher had not yet realize how great she is.Β

And it hit me a while ago. Celestia did what she did, to protect Sunset from herself, not just Equestria from Sunset. She KNEW what Sunset would become if she tried to ascend in her current world view. She became a Nightmare because her heart wasn't in balance.Β

Spending the years hiding among Human students younger than she is (which for her, in essence, would be like being surrounded by idiots), needing to study everything from scratch without being found out (having to suffer through a BROKEN education system, if Canterlot High is in America), completely cut off from her magic (her pride and joy), being unable to pursue power other than becoming prom queen at a school formal (and ultimately useless position) ...Β

I have a personal theory that the Mirror world is not any country that we know of, or Earth for that matter. Is in fact an Alternate Equestria, where Ponies never evolved and Magic never developed, which explains why there are human counterparts of everyone (for me at least).

Well, EG Pinkie Pie mentioned that Equestrian Twilight resembles another girl from another place. Chances are, this world's Sunset Shimmer still exists, but just lives in a different place, pursuing a different life, with no one knowing the wiser.
Alternatively, maybe Equestrian Sunset Shimmer disposed of the Original Sunset Shimmer and took her place in the ultimate identity theft?Β

The closest anyone ever came up with the idea was Sunset being dumped in Equestria, but that Sunset turned out to be just a sentient mismash of Sunsets from unrealized timelines and suffered from contradictory memories.

There's a fanfiction called "The Misadventures of Sunset Shimmers"

It basically goes with the idea that the Mirror Sunset Shimmer lives in a different region, never went to Canterlot High, and is friends with Mirror Twilight, and also knows Mirror Bon Bon and Mirror Lyra (who is obsessed with Ponies). The fanfic tells about Equestria Sunset after Twilight left (but it portrays her as still being at odds with the whole idea of friendship, and thinks that the only reason the Mane 5 are trying to befriend her is because they want to keep an eye on her). Meanwhile, Mirror Sunset is very smart and very ambitious, and wants to become President when she grows up (Mirror Twilight is her best friend.)
The fanfic also shows us the Mirror version of other characters, like Cadence, Discord, Lightning Dust, Shining Armor, Chrysalis... well, you get the idea.
