Description this is all prismacolor pencils on textured grey paper (i know the paper doesn't look grey in the scan, i messed with the colors slightly to make the purple show up more)i did this drawing for my portfolio for art college. the one i was considering, MCAD, requires 4 observational drawings, and i pretty much had none so far. so i set up this pretty simple still life, pretty different from my other stuff. the thing the glass is sitting on is a tin lid for prismacolor pencils because i wanted a reflective surface. i decided to make the tin lid bluish and the background a purple gradient. and for some crazy reason i decided to pick an angle to draw the glass with a ridiculous amount of reflections in the water and on the outside of the glass from random things on my desk.

but i think it'll look nice in my portfolio, add some variety. this was all drawn from life. honestly before this drawing i thought i had to rely on photo references to get an accurate rendering, but i'm really pleased with how realistic the glass looks. i'm looking forward to doing the rest of my observational drawings. maybe i'll try out my velour paper next.

thank you for looking

all feedback welcome.

Democrats always think the glass is half full. Republicans think it's theirs.

If weren't for the colours I'd think it was real!
The colours are great though, it really makes the glass jump out!
awesome!

nice to see you working on some real world stuff, the reflections and glass feel are very nice....as is the green.
have you had much perspective training yet? you seem to have a pretty good eye for it if you haven't.
perspective is a tough one.....there's alot to know and learn and even when you know the rules its
still hard to see things the way they really are. our eyes tend to trick us in many ways.

i know you love the green

no, i haven't really had much perspective training. just bits and pieces from high school. i'm glad you think i have good perspective, never really thought so myself. thanks for the nice comment

your welcome. I've had a lot of art teachers over the years, and some will always find many technical errors as per perspective and things (your glass pic has a few small things I think they might comment on), but the ones I learned the most from always pointed things out for learning purposes, but stressed the importance of style and technique, rather than being overly hung up on technical matters. My favorite teacher used to always say that you should know the rules before you break them.....very important lesson i thought.

yeah, i know there are a lot of mistakes and having teachers critique my work that much will be weird. in high school the teacher mostly left me alone and let me do my thing. but what i really need is critique to see more of the things that are wrong instead if just being complimented on the good. i think college will be a good experience for me. i appreciate your input jeff

that looks really great ^_^ i like that the ice looks like its really there, and it adds to how real the glass looks

beckhanson In reply to shadowbolt9 [2006-03-01 21:32:33 +0000 UTC]

well, actually there isn't any ice in the glass. those are just lots of reflections from the tin lid the glass was sitting on and random objects on my desk reflecting on the glass. but your comment is very much appreciated, thanks!

Beck m'dear, you are brilliant. this'll look great in your portfolio, yeah diversity of subject matter is always a good thing. I can imagine an "art teacher" taking issue with the background not being perfectly symmetrical, but then neither was the Mona Lisa's. (daring in it's day for that reason, among others.) how long did you spend on this, any idea?

on the actual drawing you can't see the strokes in the background or on the bottom. but when i scanned it i had to mess with the colors a little bit to make the purple show up. it took me an hour or two a night over like 3 nights. thank you for the nice comment

scanning is a tricky business, the strong light inside can make the white of the paper seem brighter than it does under normal lighting to the human eye, or bring up elements that are effectively hidden. sometimes some tweaking and calibrating is called for, some media don't scan too well tho, coloured pencils and acrylic paintings can be troublesome I have found.
