Phantasy Star was SEGA's flagship RPG series, and "is considered a trailblazer amongst the role-playing video game genre, both for its advanced graphics technology, and for being one of the first story-driven games released in the United States." It also, notably, features one of the first female protagonists in videogames--fifteen year-old Alis Landale, who sets out on a journey of vengeance that results in the salvation of an entire star system.

Phantasy Star III--while not the most beloved in the series--was the first RPG I'd ever played when I was a wee little Bee. I was finally able to play the original game (having not owned a SEGA Master System) when it was released in a collection pack for the Game Boy Advance. I loved the characters. I loved the story. I loved that the game was stupidly hard and made me want to kill myself.

Being a fan of "old-school" videogames, it really makes me sad that the original Phantasy Star tetralogy has faded into obscurity for a lot of people, so this is my little salute to Alis Landale and the adventures that she began.
