Description
Well, I looked around at what I'd posted so far, and realized the ladies weren't getting any love yet. So, I started with a minor character from one of my favorite Final Fantasys--Ruby, from Zidane's Tantalus Troupe.I used the BradyGames "The Art of Final Fantasy IX" book as source material, so according to Square, those are pretty much her proportions. Anyway, this is the first of two angles, so hope you like 'em!
Super Sculpey and acrylic paints once again...(67th out of 73)
Ruby & Final Fantasy IX are (c) Square-Enix

She was a very minor character...one of the members of Zidane's Tantalus Troupe from the early part of the game, and sporadically later on.

again.. i've yet to play FFIX even though i own it too.. haha
i'm so bad at finishing games! and i have this thing where i've gotta finish a game before i start playing another
me and my slight OCD... it sure is troublesome XD
so, another great sculpture! you definitely have skill with this.. are you studying sculpture in college or is this just a hobby?

I know what you mean about not moving on to the next game if you haven't finished the previous chapter...FFVIII stands as the only FF game I haven't finished (apart from FFIII, since I have no DS), but fortunately I went ahead with IX, which turned out to be easily the best of the PSone era.
Mmm, haven't been in college for years, and when I was there I had one sculpture class. I learned a little, but learned more by loads of practice. So yeah, it's just a hobby. I don't really have any ambition to do this professionally, not to mention I'm not professional caliber by a long shot. Anyway, glad you liked this one too!

Nice work! At first i though it was a painting! You've got the shapes down well. But if it's possible I think a little more definition in the hair could do her good.
Keep it up!

The hair I tried to keep in line with how anime statues do their hair, which is with little to no definition--only shapes and outlines, really. That said, I agree the hair could have turned out better. It's a little more "tubular" than it should be.
Thank you

Wow this is amazing! At the first sight, I thought it's a Computer Graphic or even 3D graphic but then realised by reading your description that you actually made it. Wonderful.
I have a little question regarding Sculpey. Does it dry on air or do you have to bake it? :sweats:

Thanks a lot for the compliment...As for Sculpey, you just toss it in the oven for awhile, you just have to keep an eye on it from time to time. I've had more than one come out charred absolutely black. Overall it's not that big of a deal, although you can get some unwanted bubbling here and there, and it probably does make the piece a bit more brittle.
Let me know if you ever give it a try. Judging by the freakishly good work in your gallery, I'd love to see what you could do with sculpture

Thanks a lot for the compliment
I don't have an oven, just a woodstove to cook my stuff on it.
Do you think that would work with a gas oven or a stone oven as well or is the heat too slow?
I once saw an oven which is specially made for burning clay but they are absolutely not affordable for a person like me.

Probably what you saw was a kiln, which is for clay and some other crafts-y things. And yep, they can be spendy. How slow the heat is shouldn't matter...it's actually best to cook it slowly. If your gas or stone oven is enclosed, I imagine it should do the trick. If you give it a try, go for the Super Sculpey (flesh colored), as opposed to a type called Sculpey III (white). Super Sculpey is firmer, and overall just works better, even if you get only half as much for roughly the same price. Good luck if you try it out, and drop me a line any time you might have more questions

Thanks a lot for your advice. That is very helpful. I've been looking around everywhere to find proper information of what kind of sculpting mass is the best and which ones the professionals use.
And thanks a lot for your offer too.

Hee hee, you should see the one I just finished the sculpt of.
I'm glad you commented on this one, as she's the piece I alluded to in my forum reply. It's more noticeable in the other angle of her, but she's the one I forgot to define her elbow before cooking.

Beelzebubba666 In reply to shalonpalmer [2007-10-19 03:32:52 +0000 UTC]
I've got a few more of them, but not as many as I'd like. That's going to be one of my main focuses when I get back into sculpting is working on my female sculpture technique. Oddly enough, I've been particularly inspired by another guy's work on here, rplatt, who primarily does cheesecake stuff, but does it amazingly well. We'll see...I have to work on my technique and patience before I tackle something like that though, I think.
As for height, I would say she's in the 6 inch range. Most of 'em are in that range, give or take an inch or two, except for characters who are naturally bigger or smaller. My Safer Sephiroth I think is the biggest, which is probably around 12 inches high with an 18 inch wingspan, I think.
