Description
A side view of my final Project for 3d Fundamentals. This was done back in april or so, about a month after my dad had passed away.It was supposed to represent Orlando (lol, everyone was like 'say whaaat?'
"For me, Orlando was an opportunity for true growth and starting a new. When I began to research our city’s history, I was surprised to find that Orlando grew out of the swamps… starting from very modest beginnings and, over time and dedication, growing to a city so bright, you can see it from space.
My inspiration for this piece came from within the human body. Spinal columns have always appeared to me as the pinnacle of growth and strength and were instantly something I wanted to incorporate. The signature curves of the human spine are tangible markers for the different stages of early development. Yet while it is strong and sturdy, it is also very fragile. I decided to turn the spinal column into a simpler abstraction of the human form, and to shape it as if it were a twisted, gnawed up tree, yet still with life and blossoms. Trees are also very commonly thought of as symbols of growth and strength. For me, trees have also always given me a feeling of safety and protection under large, shady branches. As I continue to formulate the person I am becoming, Orlando has been the perfect backdrop for my metamorphosis and has given me stable ground as I enter very uncertain times in my life.
I chose to cover the top of my spine tree in violently violet butterflies for a number of reasons. Violet has always been the first color I imagine when I think of spring, of blooming and growing. I think it’s also a very unforgiving color and I like the fact that it owns up to all of its bold glory. I chose butterflies because they are an easily recognizable symbol of metamorphosis and spectacular growth from very humble beginnings.
For my site, I chose a deserted, concrete slab of a lot on the corner of Orange and Pine. In the heart of downtown, I like the idea of something so oddly organic blooming on a street corner. I also planned to turn the lot into a small park, with benches, bushes, grass and a gravel path, to give the industrialized downtown a small corner of peace and a place to interact with the truly unique citizens of our city."
