Holy hell. Did you use more than one layer or just warping effects? Never before has such little movement had such a strong effect O.O

Just warping. Actually, it's called a displacement map. That sort of thing allows to simulate depth easier than with just compositing multi-layered files. And it's the fact that the "movement" happens simultaneously at the back and front in opposite directions that further enhances the effect.

Interesting. I've used displacement mapping in 3D software, but this is something totally different. Thanks for letting me know!

How did you make this?? I want to know how to use AE

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Bellick In reply to LaMere01 [2012-08-30 04:41:08 +0000 UTC]

What I did was to first draw the dog on a math exam. Second, I scanned the dog, opened the file in Photoshop, and, in a second new layer, started painting with the brush a sort of representation of the depth of the image with just black white. Using white to paint on top of the areas "closest" to the viewer and black for the farthest (with different shades of gray in between of course) I created what is called a depth map (also useful for different rendering techniques in 3D modelling software such as Maya and 3D Max). Then I imported the Photoshop file to After Effects into a new composition and applied an Effect to the original image layer called displacement map, set it to use the second layer as it's map and just tweeked with the effect's values until I got an animation movement that I liked. Druing this process I had to get back to Photoshop and edit the depth map to correct depth issues several times. In total it took me about 10 hours to get it right.

My pleasure. If you would ever make something following that technique please be sure to let me know. I could throw in some feedback if you'd like. Bear in mind you could do with anything, even a photograph. Also, you should check this blog [link] and ~TidensBarn 's gallery. I drew inspiration from them although their work is a little messy imo. I'm not sure if they followed the same technique but their results are pretty much the same and they're amazing.

Ok. Im going to try this with an image of my boyfriend. Hopefully what u said in the replys will be enough steps for me. I was also curious if I could have ur email to show u the success of the effect on my boyfriend....I will NOT post him on here.
