Story:

Renna nearly didn’t partake in the hunting festival this year, what with all of her other projects she had going on. She had more than enough horses to train, a stable to manage, job applications to submit, not to mention her family was in a state of holiday panic. Renna just didn’t feel like she had the time.

It was her friend that convinced her.

“Come on, you haven’t missed a single year since they’ve held the event. You and Percy always join the hunt.”

Renna grimaced. “I don’t know if it would be worth going. The competition is always really tough. I don’t feel like me or the horses are up to it. I don’t want to face another loss.”

“So what? It’s the hunt. When else do you get to play reverse tag on horseback? Besides,” her friend gestured out the window to the pasture where the horses were peacefully grazing. “You should show off The Lion. A lot of people had their eyes on him, you know. At least show him off at the halter event.”

“He still needs training for that,” Renna said, turning back to the papers on her desk. This months expenses were getting tight, and it was starting to weigh on her.

“Come on, pleeeease? I don’t want to go alone.”

Renna sighed at her friend, then looked back at her papers. She sighed again. “Alright, I should be able to make something work.”

Weeks later, just before the event, Renna was getting the Lion ready for the trip to the TUA grounds. The trainer said he had been doing well and would be likely to win some sort of ribbon. It would be a quick day trip. Ride to the grounds, show in the halter and then leave that same day. She didn’t have time to stay longer than that. But just as she was about to close the trailer doors, she hesitated. She had heard rumors that the Hunt was to take place at night. She had missed the thrill of running wild in the mountains. Was she really going to pass that up this year? It was like her friend said. It was tradition at this point.

Renna swore to herself, then turned around and went back to the paddock to grab the sooty chestnut stallion. His ears perked up in the sudden change in routine.

“Just for the heck of it.” Renna said to him as she got his travel gear on. “Hopefully this will help teach me not to be such a freaking competitive person.”

They were going to be late, Renna just hoped they wouldn’t be too late.

It had been storming for days on end at the TUA grounds. The stables were caked in mud and most of the events had been moved indoors. It was a nightmare just trying to keep both of her horses clean. The Lion had already decided to take a mud bath on arrival, and Percy found the numerous puddles absolutely delightful, splashing his feet and getting water everywhere. Renna was just beginning to have doubts about the hunt. It was going to turn into a swamp at this rate, and she wasn’t sure if she really wanted both of them to muck through all of the thunderstorm aftermath.

The halter event came and went about as smoothly as Renna could have hoped for, and still the rain hadn’t let up.

The Little Lion man wasn't so much a gentle giant as he was a cheeky gentle giant. He had been sent for training the past couple of weeks just for this event. He was a much bigger horse than Renna was used to, and hardly had any idea what to use him for, but perhaps this was just the competition for the Lion to show what he was made of. His strange, molten coat had already caught a few eyes, but what they didn't know was that the "little bastard" that Renna playfully called him was quite the prankster. The morning of the show, the Little Bastard constantly bobbed his head around, as if he were listening to one of those EDM songs to psych himself up before the competition. This made braiding his hair nearly impossible, and Renna decided to leave it loose in defeat. Every time Renna bent down to trim his legs, she was nearly pushed over, but when she turned to catch the Little Bastard in the act, he would be looking away and licking his lips as if nothing had happened.

Renna sighed. The training they spent on seemed like a waste at this rate, but he was still a young horse, after all. It would be good to get him some experience, and perhaps in time he would begin to settle into a more willing companion.
Finally, after spending the rest of their prep time getting the halter onto his bobbing head, they made their way to the arena. It was as if a switch was flipped. The Little Lion was in performance mode, prancing this way and that in his new, white halter. He knew just how good he looked, and he knew he could get away with any of his antics.
