Okay so as I was saying before I had to do stuff (though I really wasn't saying anything...), this is one of the many images I've been working on for my AP Art class. We're supposed to choose a concentration topic and my topic was "time"...this being the end of said time (dark I know).

Anywho a bit about the pic.

This is my interpretation of Death. He holds the typical scythe for the reaping of the souls and is a skeleton draped in black yadda yadda. My interpretation holds some different aspects, to.

First, I gave Death wings. I know this might occur in some other images but I gave Death wings for a specific reason: that he might be an angel. The oldest angel, even. Some people wish for Death's embrace, and to be greeted by an angel would be a peaceful end. This also carries with he reasoning for his hood, so that people do not fear Death's skeletal and empty face when they die and can be at peace. Of course, his wings are also black, suggesting a more sinister side to the people that fear Death or aren't ready to die.

There is also the watch. Death is sort of the ultimate lord of time, giving everything an end. In this case, I have drawn the pocket watch's chain winding around Death, bound to him. The face of the clock is cracked, as though the watch itself is broken and the dead person's time cannot go on.

The surroundings are fairly typically, but there is a reason for that, too; and the reasoning is paired hand-in-hand with the contract he holds in his hand. I imagine that everyone is given a choice when they die. Are they ready to carry on to whatever afterlife they deserve? Or are they afraid of the world beyond and would rather stay behind and linger? You can only get this chance to sign the contract once, so your choice has some weight. The background is like a void, lit by your personal time/experience (the pocket watch), so it is a neutral ground where you can only judge yourself.

The people that choose to linger become ghosts, haunting the world for eternity. Some go mad and want desperately the chance to go to the afterlife and Death is forced to reap their souls, hence the blood spatters and stains on the document. In reaping their souls when they already refused to sign the document, they are erased completely from existence; their souls are essentially obliterated.
