When you do these mechanical speed paints do you use references to get the look of certain parts down or are a lot of these shapes ones that you've familiarized through sheer practice?

before I used references, from different artists. I study their styles, brushes they used, color schemes, then after that, I modify it and make my own style of putting a quickpaint of my mechanical designs. And if you work for it everyday, it will develop/improve your painting techniques.

Thanks saydistance1! yeah it needs to be detailed in clear for 3d but I have no intention to use this for that because for now, I am doing mech with this kind of complex, abstract parts on it and not putting up the very much looks of the concept. And if I do lines, it will eat up my time.

Nice concept art, but there is something you can do to become even better. Concepts like this are usually made to be modelled in 3d and everything about the design has to be very clear. I'd reccomend you to draw some mechanical stuff only with lines. In my oppinion this exercise will make your concepts stronger.
