She stood at the mouth of the Pits, looking in on the deteriorated form of the tom she once loved-- still loved. Nicholas had taken a single glance at the grievous wounds on her stomach and turned his gaze away, shame apparent on his cracked and darkened face. She longed for him to speak, to say something-- anything-- but her apprentice remained as silent as the shadows that shifted around him.
Her heart bled. She knew that Nicholas would never forgive himself for what he'd done. She didn't expect him to. Part of her felt relief at the return of his conscience, but her other half's heart broke. Seeing him the way he was brought her unimaginable pain. All she wanted was to join him in the darkness below, put her tail around him and hold him as she did when he was a child. She wanted to reassure him that everything would be okay... but she couldn't lie to him.
"Nicholas," Her voice came out broken and aged, her rasp sounding nearly deafening in the silence below. "Know that despite all that's happened, no matter your reasoning for the deeds you've committed, I still am and will always be your mentor." And even if not by blood, your mother. "I never stopped loving you."
And I never will.

Fluff this is so beautiful! I haven't gotten around to commenting on it yet because every time I come here I'm distracted by songs and all the art on the sidebar. But man, Bathy and Nic's relationship just tears me up, and this is a fantastic sequel to your little Sunrise drawing. I love the lighting and the perspective, and I love all of the darkness wisps coming off of Nicholas. Everyone's expressions are so sad and guilty. I just love this.
