Description
The Delhi Sultanate, at its height, ruled over a large portion of the Indian subcontinent during the late medieval period. The Sultanate originated with the Ghurid Empire's conquest of the Rajput Confederacy in 1192 . Initially, the Dehli Sultanate was a grouping of principalities ruled by Turkic slave generals of Muhammad Ghori (See: Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt). While the Ghurid Empire itself fell in 1215 , its northern Indian conquests remained intact, effectively becoming a successor to the Ghurid Empire.Under the Khalji and Tughluq Dynasties, additional Muslim conquests expanded the Delhi Sultanate to nearly entirety of present-day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Delhi Sultanate fell into decline when Timur the Lame invaded Delhi. The aftermath of this devastating raid saw a fragmenting the Sultanate into several smaller sultanates, as well as the reemergence of Hindu powers such as the Vijayanagara Empire . What was left of the Delhi Sultanate was eventually conquered by the Timurid ruler Babur and the Mughal Empire.
