Media: Colored pencil on black paper. Can you tell I'm enjoying the colored pencil on black paper stuff right now?
The speckle-bellied tree basilisk. Small, carnivorous eight-legged reptiles of some unnamed world. Unlike its larger relatives which either kill or petrify with a glance, its gaze only causes temporary paralysis, which it uses to more easily catch small prey or escape from larger predators. They are also known for a very potent and deadly venom. They can only produce a small amount of venom at a time, and so only use it as a last resort. The venom has a number of magical properties. Wizards have been known to keep the tree basilisk in captivity to harvest this venom, and will pay well any adventurer who manages to capture one.
Went with the more lizard-like interpretation of the basilisk, rather than the popular serpent or cockatrice-styled creature here. I have no idea what the deal is with that tree. I just sort of made that up as I went along. I actually originally wanted to do a piece that was focused on a bioluminescent dragonfly type insect, but ended up making the dragonfly the prey
The clouds were an afterthought. I finished the basilisk and the tree and realized I had no idea what I wanted to do with the background. Heehee. Was fun, though
