Description
Part of a Death Note mini-shoot *Veleven and I did with *CaramelClouds at Perth Supanova, 2012. It was a really interesting experience cosplaying Watari. Definitely a huge contrast to the other, livelier characters I've played, but still incredibly fun. I walked around for two days completely in character, carrying a sweet supply of refreshments for L (*Veleven ). My arms got very tired, but it was honestly my pleasure, Ryuuzaki!Photography by

That is the best thing ever. One critique: You need to use some makeup effects to age your skin, you don't look nearly old enough to convincingly portray Watari. I love every other aspect of your costume though - you even didn't overlook the importance of dying your eyebrows!

I actually did use quite a lot of makeup in an attempt to age my skin and make the shape of my face a little more masculine, although it was my first time using makeup effects, so I still have a lot to learn.
Hahaha - I appreciate it, but I actually didn't dye my eyebrows. I made them and glued them on, same as the ears and mustache.

Ah, that's what I was thinking it had to be, because any other glue would be painful to remove. I've never had an opportunity to use Spirit gum for any of my costumes. Could you use Spirit gum to attach, say, small horns made of Sculpey to your face? Or maybe carved foam horns covered in gesso to make them lightweight? I'm doing a dragon costume, so I'm tossing around ideas for the face.

Yeah, if you're using Spirit Gum, make sure you also buy a special remover - otherwise it will be like tearing little bits of plastic from your skin piece by piece!
I'm not sure about Sculpey. I haven't used it before. Is it relatively lightweight? People generally use Spirit Gum for attaching all kinds of prosthetics to their faces and ears - and I've seen horns done as well - so that's what it's for. But I think usually the best result is when the piece is lightweight. Otherwise it won't connect well, and then pull away too much, and you won't be comfortable or happy at all.

Heh, thanks for the tip about buying the Spirit gum remover. I probably would have just tried soaking it in olive oil or something. As for Sculpey, it's...kinda weighty, but in small amounts, & hollowed out, it'd probably be less so. Hmm. Maybe foamcore painted with Gesso is the way to go.

Well, today I managed to carve my two dragon horns (about six inches long, each) from foam. I'll have to sand them down a little bit more, then cover them in Gesso for toughness. Those will go on my head, though I'm not too sure how I'll attach them yet. Anyway, thanks for the conversation!

That's progress! You're very welcome. I can't say I've ever tried horns before (and I can't think of any cosplays I'd like to do which include horns), but I *have* seen them done, so, BE ENCOURAGED!
