UPDATE: BLAAAAAAACK!!!!Colors so far. I am convinced that mias had a horrible magical accident as a child that caused his hair to oscillate wildly in color, which he currently hides with some such hair dye but still shows through to a degree. This explains why it is impossible to tell what color his hair ACTUALLY IS. This would also apply to elias if he wasn't such a slimeball.
He'd probably tell you it was the color of a raven's wing.
Mias, Elle, and Elias belong to

if you are wanting to learn to shade, I would recommend purchasing the book Color and Light by James Gurney. That's probably one of the best painting resources I have come across.

By the way, where do you buy those markers? I know my friends tend to use prisma color markers, but I'm curious about other kinds too. Could you get them someplace like Michael's? I haven't really done much coloring by hand, so I'm fascinated.

I would use a brush to fill in your black areas since it seems that your marks look rather sketchy. You may also want to consider scanning your line art and using a computer program to increase the contrast so your lines look very black, then add the red. It seems like you are just having trouble getting your blacks completely black and your whites very white.

its not that it would improve it, its that there are certain functions within photoshop that you can use to improve the visual quality of something completed by hand as it is displayed on the computer. Im sure you know that oftentimes scanning or photographing a picture completed by hand and then putting it on the computer can change the way the original picture can look (because of the way scanners use bright light to capture an image, it can wash out dark blacks or make smooth color areas look sketchy and weak). Using photoshop can correct a lot of these errors.

I cannot believe your marker skills! The vast array of colours that you build up. *shakes head* This is already looking so gorgeous, I am so excited about the finished result! I can't believe you are doing this for me, its so wonderful and heart lifting. I can't thank you enough for making me feel this way when I see your art. I feel like I should be paying you for this! I'll definately want to buy a print of this when its finished.
And thats the wonderful thing about black hair, it can have any tone it wants but I adore what you have done for Mias and Elias. And I love Elle's blush too!

I'm using canson smooth bristol with copic multiliners, although this particular drawing i reprinted the lines onto the bristol since i had to correct some errors in the original lineart. I can't really say which colors exactly I used for the blues in the flesh....I really used a lot and did a lot of blending! But I can say that the b90s (1/3/5) and bv20s (0/3/5) and RV 93/95 are helpful. For mias and elias though I used a lot of blue greens layered over red and red violet colors, which became neutral with a slight bluish/reddish tinge depending on the strength of the colors. Overall I would recommend printing out the copic marker color chart from copicmarker.com and putting the colors you have on that and then just become more familiar with color theory so when you blend colors you get the effects you want. And lots of practice. And looking at other marker work.....
hope it helps!

Wow , doesn't canson bristol suck the ink from your markers ?
Also my printer can never print on thick paper XD , it always jams
Oh okay..I see.

BethanyRoot In reply to Aicent [2011-08-01 17:42:52 +0000 UTC]
Well, the paper is thicker, so it does use a bit more ink, but I've been using bristol on almost all of my drawings and it is better because it absorbs the ink into the fibers and allows the surface to remain wet longer so you can do more wet into wet blending (the key to those flawless blends!!) Dont worry about how much ink you are using. Most often you need to lay down more to even get your areas smooth, and copics last forever anyway (especially the sketch)
For the printing I just go to my nearest printer and take the paper with me...this also helps because I can print the drawing larger so I don't have to worry so much about bleeding with all my psychotic masochistic details
