Wow, beautiful! Everything fits into this well, especially the way the background was done. It doesn't look like the Pikachu was pasted on top of the background, which is difficult to accomplish!
May I ask how you approached doing the background? I've been trying to do better backgrounds lately.

The easiest way to make it look like the pokemon was made for the background is to do the background first, then you understand where the light and dark is on it >.> Makes it easier to understand as to colouring the main creature first then adding the background xD
Hmmm... I always do the things in the far ground first, so the sky was the first thing I did, then it was the clouds, the rocks came after that then the ground. I added a mist in tohelp with the transation from ground to sky, because I didn't like how it looked on it's own, then the pikachu was coloured, followed by the grass and main lighting :3

I've been working with a 'toned' background to get a sense of the mood, but I've never thought of doing the background first, which makes way more sense.

xD A lot of artists colour the character first then the background, there's alotof professional artists that do that too, so idk, I figured though it's normally the backgrounds that make the pictures as to the characters, so why not do the background first? Yes, charactrs are a large part of drawing, but eh, idk xD

Well, I mean, to get a good looking drawing, you have to make the character and background mesh together, which is difficult if you do it the other way around. I mean, usually you know what kind of character you're drawing, and you know what it's going to look like, but the background is usually more... abstract, I guess. So, you feel you've got more freedom and tend to stray from whatever you chose to do when you drew the character. At least if you make the background, you know exactly what kind of a feel you're going for, and can implement the character much more efficiently.
At least, that's what I think :3

Love the illumination around the upper half of the body.
You could probabbly put more detail into the fur from teh neck down if you wanted to really make it look a tad more realistic i guess.
Or instead throw in more dark shadows over his body all together. But if it don't look nearly as good, then back off the shadows and keep it as it is.
The ground in front of him could have more of a shadow.
EXAMPLE: When most objects are standing in front of a light, they appear as black outlines. The light behind them is too bright for the eye to pick up any colors on the object standing in front of the light. So yea... thats my little art rant
