One of the ways. Him becoming a pony is an off and on thing that depends on how much magic his normal human body absorbs. Should it absorb more than normal or too much then the result is him automatically without control turning into a pony in oder to use said form to release the magic and expell it from his body. When he has drained himself od magic he returns to his human form. Though there cam be times where Tommy can willingly transform into his pony form even if he isn't overloaded on magic which only results in him having a shorter time as said pony form...

Yes they are pretty big pones for alicorns. Basically 4 alicorns sizes into one or basically 4 ponies mass in one body so basically 4 times the size of a normal pone.
