Oh yeah, this happened in Death Note: The Last Name...I still can't figure out how the hell he faked his own death...Did he take a fake death pill?

I feel silly responding to a 2-year-old comment, but.....he faked his by writing his name in the Death Note first. He set himself up to die 23 days later (the max time set for a Death Note) so when Rem wrote L's name it didn't work. So, pretty much what happened in this comic happened after that.
You get to see what L does with those remaining 23 days in the movie "L: Change the World" (or the novel adaptation, which is fairly different)
