Description
Part I of my Bigger Red Speed Painting of Tim Curry as the character Darkness from Ridley Scott's movie 'Legend'.This clip is the first 30 minutes sped up a little.
I've always loved the character design for this guy and following the Hellboy speedpainting, this one popped into my head as a possible next choice.
At the beginning of the video, you will see I used the Pen tool to make a path and then selected it in the Paths palette. This gives a nice clean edge to the base section to use as a starting point.
From there, it's pretty standard stuff - flicking between painting with the Brush tool and also using Burn & Dodge.
Any questions, just ask.

Please note: I have ticked the 'Critique not desired' box. This is the very early stages of the painting so it is all very rough and unfinished.

Iยดm going to ask something quite silly...
When you're using the brush, you change it's size without opening the upper brush menu?
How do you do that?

Pressing the [ key makes the brush smaller. Pressing the ] key makes it bigger.
Easy peasy!

I'm impressed! ...again
It's so cool that at the very beginning you can't imagine that it's going to be such a great painting. (that is, when someone has never seen your submissions before)
And it's great you chose Tim Curry!

I love your style! Which version of photoshop do you use? I'm still using CS, I'm not sure if bumping up to CS3 is a good move but I haven't heard bad things about it.

Thanks - glad you like it.
I'm using Photoshop CS2 and have no plans to upgrade. Although with CS4 due out next month, you never know...

When you're painting with the Brush tool, right click at any time to bring up the brushes list. Simple eh?

He's fantastic as Pennywise the clown in Stephen King's It too. Unless you have a fear of clowns, in which case avoid like the plague!

LOL! I didn't realise it had recorded the music I had on in the background and sped up 4x it sounds awful so I've replaced it with the silent version.
It'llbe on YouTube in a little while with some proper music.

It works great as a tutorial so it sounds like you've put it in the right place.
This is faster playback than the Hellboy one, mainly to try and reduce the file size a bit. The Hellboy clips are almost original speed whereas this is 4x quicker than real life.

This is the very early stage of the painting. Very rarely will I lay down some initial detail and not go back to it so the reflections you see in this clip are not necessarily how they will end up.
