I very rarely blend. I wasn't taught how to do it at school all those years ago so I've never thought to do it. The occasional bit of smudging with a fingertip is about as far as it goes!

I'd recommend not using fingertips because the oils can cause the graphite to stick oddly. The fingerprints can make your drawing look like a crime scene. I use cotton balls, Q-tips, and stomps/tortillons and find those work very well.
