Description
Every major intersection in Tokyo (and most of Japan from what I've seen) has a coffee shop overlooking it. You've probably seen the views in movies like Lost in Translation .The window side seats are tough to get, especially during peak periods. But your best bet is to get in early or late. Or real late like this, which is after closing time. A quick jump of the rope and a dash up the stairs and there's no problem getting a view.
Ginza, Tokyo.

Yeah it reminds me a bit of Lost in Translation. Great movie. Even one of the best I ever saw I've never been in Tokyo but I somehow do understand the movie, I guess. Perhaps I'll go there one day

I don't think I'd classify it as one of the best, but it is a good movie.
Once you make it here, you'll understand it even more.

I know all the comment have reflected the thing that is Tokyo coffee shops up to this point but I see this image in a completely different way. It's seems really 40's US to me. Why? The checkered pattern beneath the counter, the smooth rounded lines of the counter and the spacer in the window and all the small round lights outside. I half expect to see one of those old style ganster cars go past.
For me the whole image draws me not to the figures but to the lights out side the second window.
Great shot Bill. Going to miss you Japan stuff when you go.

Now that would have tripped me out. See a nice old Packard rolling by, men in their trenchcoats and fedora's hanign out the windows.
Thank you so much. I'm going to miss shooting the stuff.

I hope you don't get me wrong here, I love all your work, but whenever you come out with a street shot like this one or like [link] it just blows me away.
I can only second what Mike mentioned earlier. You really have a gift to capture magic of the moment.

This is why it's a pleasure to have you on my watchlist my frend, you have a talent for turning the everyday into dsomething magical!
Such a gorgeous scene, the two women sharing a moment of private friendship and overlooking the lights of the big city, I love it!
On a more technical note, I think the b and w works beautifully here... the only thing that catches my eye is that there is some visible sharpenning alias on some of the brighter areas (like on the counter around the bag).

Thanks for pointing that out, Mike. Odd, because I barely sharpened, so I'm having a hard time understanding the jaggies that appear. I may have to look at my resizing and see if that had something to do with it.
And thank you for the kind words, my friend.

I never watched all of Lost in Translation...but this is such a nice scene. So peaceful, calm, and content.

It's a lovely picture and so is this.

I didn't like that movie either.
Anyways, I loved those Starbucks, people hate them here but I owe them my allegiance due to their non-smoking only policy. Less than 5 minutes in Dotour and my asthma rendered me a choking, wheazing mess. I remain loyal because of that alone.
And the best thing about coffee in Tokyo? They NEVER kick you out, you could stay for hours with one drink!

billsabub In reply to bukephalas [2006-07-14 23:59:22 +0000 UTC]
Really?
That's odd. I would figure with your experiences you could at least appreciate the situations and humor. But it's definitely a movie that you have to wrap your brain around and digest for a few days.
I never buy coffee in these places. I just really had to go pee!

I dunno, I just couldn't relate to the girl especially. The half an hour spent watching her stare out the window and lounge around the suite in her underwear was annoying too.

Boring? Nah. Definitely more enjoyable having lived here and understanding the issues and situations, which I'm sure would be very difficult to grasp had you not dealt with it first-hand.
Thanks!
