wow this is amazing! I've been trying to do some pokeballs myself, even though I only started with 3D a few days ago but this is incredible, which program did you use for the models and background? I've been trying with 3dmax but its render is not very good and I can't do background easily there either so if you could give any tips it would be great

Well, I can't say much about methods and techniques here cause there's so much to talk about, but the "trick" here is using and HDR image as a environment map. It's a type of panorama of the entire ambient. It gives the objects something to reflect other than geometry. And since those images are usually photographs, they give this "realistic" feel. And sorry for the late reply, by the way.
