started as a bit of a joke between myself and Dale Eadah, as we were wincing at just how frequently the Thunderbolt was getting it's cockpit painted with a "sunroof" for some reason. Being a bit more closely connected with the Assassin, another Mech that seems to get the cockpit painted wrongly more often than rightly (so much a misunderstanding PGI designed their model with the wrong cockpit also, something HBS would correct later on the imported model for their game).

Admittedly, on one's own minis, etc, one is free to paint stuff however they want. But that's not to be confused with "canon correct". You can give Jaime Wolf a pink Archer with Bunny Ears if it tickles your Elmo. But you're also going to get some funny looks and no one is going to consider it "correct". (fun? sure, it does indeed sound fun, lol)

As for how I can be so certain of what the "correct" Assassin Cockpit is? Well, I could tell you, but then I'd have to end you rightly. Contracts. etc.
