Description
The General Motors Marksman originated in a Seversky proposal for an Army pursuit which the US military didn't want. It found an outlet as an export fighter, being produced mostly for Australia as the General Motors Marksman I (Model PA-312V).The Marksman is made up of: Grumman Avenger (engine and propeller shaft), Douglas Dauntless (propeller blades, wing, central fuselage section and cockpit), Seversky P-35 (rear cockpit and corresponding fuselage section), Vultee V-1 (tail section) and even Douglas Skyraider (windshield).
The Victor was a racer prototype designed by famous entrepreneurs Hughes and Tucker, and built by Vultee. It was proposed for a US Army Air Force competition but was found unsuitable to the restrictive military criteria.
The Victor was created using the Hughes H-1 racer as a basis. The tail unit is adapted from a Vultee P-66. Main wheeltrain is from a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. Engine cowling is from the Fisher Body XP-75A Eagle. Propellers were completely reworked from the Douglas XB-42 Mixmaster. Fuselage lines and panelling were partly reworked.
The Cheetah resulted from an attempt by the Air Force to incorporate desirable elements from several current designs into a single one. Grumman was commissioned to do the job but the type went no further than the two prototypes.
The Cheetah was initially based on a mix of Grumman F-11 Tiger and Convair F-106 Delta Dart. The wheels were taken from a Vought F-8 Crusader, and so was the front end of the fin. Nose probe and fire exhaust were taken from a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.

Interesting Amalgamations of aircraft components to make these mutation designs.

A fighter implies maneuverability... If not, it's an interceptor (F-104) or a low-altitude attack (F-117).
So I can't really see the X-20 in that role...

I haven't been on What If in nearly two years now... Just too many places to go and I had to limit myself somehow.
Also I was a bit annoyed that the Whiffies took so long to get sorted out. Late in 2012 the winners for 2011 were not nominated yet. We had voted for months and now they were presenting us with a new set of votes for the 2012 submissions while the 2011 winners still were not known...Β I had a feeling no-one was really running the show there!
This being said, I might pop up there some day... that is, if I can remember my ID and password...
