Description This is a completely reworking of Norman Rockwell's famous painting "The problem we have to live with", which depicted the first Black child to be escorted to a previously all-white school in the early 1960s. This new version was created upon realization that despite many advances, the situation of Black America still leaves a lot to be desired, what with violent police action and systemic poverty remaining in certain areas. In the new image, the little girl now faces the military men, who are walking towards her while she stands in defiance. Their armbands now just read "U.S." instead of "Deputy U.S. Marshals" to refer to forceful power in general. The "N" word is still tagged on the wall, and the rotten tomatoes splashed all over, indicating that some things haven't changed, and that hatred is still present. Instead of her school books, pens and ruler, the little girl now holds a book that says "Black Lives Matter," to signify that progress can only come through reading and social awareness, and that defending the rights to live just like any other citizen is an absolute priority. The piece has a new title, indicating that the appalling violence and disdain can no longer be tolerated in a modern society. Finally, I changed the signature of the image by creating a fake painter in the form of an anagram of Norman Rockwell: "Marlon Wrenlock".
