Her mask was damaged during a failedΒ routine engine test back when she used to work a doom-ship engineer under Bowser. Not only was her mask damaged by the exploding engine, she got the blame for the malfunction too and got the sack, which is why she can't really afford replacement clothes.
because it's really hard to find employment in the mushroom kingdom when you have Bowser as your previews employer, she currently makes a living as the sole employee of her own "chores and errands" service, doing household chores and odd-jobs for a small fee. She plans to eventually land a job in her specialty field as an engine mechanic, though she also has experience with plumbing and construction.
