hehe, like coloring and stuff?? * U *
for shading I always use a multiply mode on a layer clipping, and I always try to shade in a color that isn't gray! (sometimes I have to use gray, though, like when choosing a colored shade color just cannot work!)
then after I'm done shading (with a regular, round, solid brush), I turn the shading layer into a lock opacity layer (so that if I mess up, I can just fix it easily!) and grab an airbrush at around 5-ish opacity, and sort of scrub at the shaded area? ; v ;;; which makes it lighter and stuff and I like the way it looks so its all good!! That's basically it for the shading, which i think is the bulk of what makes my stuff look somewhat decent hahah
oh!! and sometimes I make gradient shadows, because it makes hair pop out and stuff

Okay, so I'll start with eyes first, cause that's what I always color first U v U

From there I zoom into the eye area, and start filling in the base colors. The eye here is supposed to be really light, so it blends in with the sclera somwhat 0 u 0;;;

Okay, here's where the first and second shading layers come in!!

I'm not sure how much you know about layer settings and stuff, but for the first shading, I just set it to multiply, which is found right above the opacity settings for the layer - I also check the "clipping" box, so I don't have to worry about shading out of my base color! Ahh, and I'm sorry about my goofy layer names;; i'm lazy so I usually just quickly type in whatever letters are in the word I want to use for the layer ;;; (like shahhad for shadow lmaoo)
Here's the first layer of shading, which is the first clipping layer above the base layer!

Then, to keep the colors of the first shading layer, but still make it darker, I add a second shading layer!

You can also see that a portion of the top part of the eye is lighter - there I just grabbed my airbrush, set at ~5ish opacity and wiped it across the shading a bit.
To finish the eye I add colorful sparkles:

all I do is get a very saturated, bright color and make an 'x' or a dot/line, and then get a solid round brush, pick white, and fill in the middle, so it looks outlined. 8 u 8
That's just about all I do for eyes!
Next I do the lines for the hairstyles and stuff, it's not that interesting, and I just use a regular round brush at the 0.5 size, to get really thin lines! Kay, I'll do the next parts and show you when I get them; just wondering, are there certain things you want to see how I do? 8 u 8

Kay, so now that I've got all these darn lines down, all nice and neat inside my line art layer folder.

With the folder selected, I press the "Merge Layer Set Button" (its the button in the same row as the trash button, and has a picture of a file with an arrow pointing down). This, well, merges all the layers in my folder into one.

After that I select my flat line art with the selection pen. You can use any selection wand tool or whatever to do this step. After you've had it selected, ctrl+c to copy the lineart. From there, use ctrl+z to redo the steps you did (so you can go back to where your lineart was still separate and in a folder.)

This next part is important, in order to keep your layer stacks nice and neat. Create a folder inside your lineart folder. With it selected, copy paste a bunch of the flat lineart inside. Your lineart will probably not look as gross as mine hohoho.

Now that you have extra thick lines, select your main line art folder (or even the sub folder holding all of your extra lines) and then use the wand tool (on SAI, I set it to Transparency (strict) @ around 170-ish tolerance ). Use the wand to select the empty areas.

Now that its all selected, press the invert button selection button (it should be on the bar underneath your toolbar, next to a check box with selection next to it. In PS all you have to do is, with the magic wand button, right click and click "invert").

Now there's gross gaps surrounding your line art. Here's a quick, messy fix: Go up to selection, and then click on Increment (1). It will increase the selected area by 1 pixel, which should be enough to fill in the gap. On photoshop I believe you have to click on Select>Modify>Expand. However I only have PS7 so I'm not sure if that's different on newer versions. ;;;

Now that you have it nice and filled out, click on the invert button again. Now your selection looks gross again. It's okay, though. If you feel that the gaps are too big, feel free to Increment(1)/expand again.

Now that its been selected, create a new file folder, seperate from your lineart folder. This will be your color folder, and should be underneath your line folder. Create a new layer, name it whatever -- this will be what helps me from coloring outside of the perimeters of the character.

Deselect, and look at the gray parts. There are going to be lots of places where there are gray blobs coming out of the lineart - they're super gross!! Zoom in and erase them.

This next step is optional - personally I like it, but you may not, and its not really mandatory. For this step, create two new layers, and place them underneath the gray layer. Select the gray filling with your wand (on Sai I change my wand settings to "Color Difference" @ around 240 Color diff.), now use Selection>Increment(1) (or on PS, Selection>Modify>Expand by one pixel). Click on the layer directly underneath the gray one, and color the selection in black. This will create a black outline around your line art. To Spice things up, after you've colored your character in, you can lock the opacity of your black outline layer and make it colorful. Repeat the steps used to make the black outline to create a white one, which will surround the black outline.

Create a new layer over the gray layer, for your skin base color!! Always keep the gray layer selected, cause it'll stop you from coloring outside of the lines of the character!

Important!! After you've colored in the base skin color, you may deselect the gray area. Now, you can just click the "Preserve Opacity" button, or, if you're on PS, you can click the "Transparency Lock Button". Click this makes sure that you cannot color outside of the areas that have been colored in already.

Here's my usual skin palette. Sometimes I change the base skin color, but the shade color usually doesn't change too much.
Key to Colors:
1 - My usual base skin color.
2 - My soft shade air brush color.
NOTE - 3 and 4 are both shading colors, however I usually use either or, depending on what kind of shade I want.
3 - Light Shading Color (lighter and less saturated)
4 - Dark Shading Color (darker and very saturated)
5 - Blush Color

Now, with an airbrush @ around 5-ish density/opacity, I lightly shade the chin area, and the chest and lower body area.

Now, I make a new layer, turn it into a clipping layer and a multiply layer, and start to shade (I used color #4 for this one). The multiply layer makes the color very intense!! But that's okay, because of the next step. I use a regular round solid brush.

Now, get the same air brush as before, and start to erase parts of the shadow, lessening the intenseness of it. To do this in SAI, click the transparent brush setting, as shown below.

Go back to using a solid brush, and pick the base color you used. Put dots on the cheeks, and thinly outline the chin!! (this part is optional, but I like the effect these two things do u v u)
