Description
Britannia - the embodied spirit of Britain (in much the same way as Uncle Sam is used in the US).An Empire on which the sun never set... etc. etc.
This was done as a favour to a friend of mind who could best be described (in this context) as having a rather... Victorian frame of mind.
EDIT: I am moving this to the scraps section. It seems to attract a disproportionate number of my viewers, and for the most part these viewers are not interested in anything else in my gallery. Perhaps if the attraction of erstwhile British patriots led to more traffic I would appreciate it more, but having something this bad as my most-faved piece is just silly.
EDIT 2: And of course, this picture has more favs than any of my other images (possibly more than all my other pictures COMBINED). Yet the image quality is so horrible it's a complete embarssment. Yep, same old DevArt.
I'd take it down if I didn't pray that maybe one in ten of the ideologues who fav this travesty would stop and look at some of my other less-terrible junk.
Ah well.

Your other work is indeed excellent - I guess it just represents an ethos that many Brits appreciate.
Compared to the current heap of junk that comprises the current UK, dreaming of the imperial past is perhaps more appealling to many...

Oh really? I donβt think, especially in the recent light of what the President has done to recognise a certain Middle Eastern country, one can really say that...

There really is only two world circling empires, that of Britain and that of Spain.
Would you consider doing a similar deviation for Spain?

I don't really understand why you find it so embarrassing that people have favourited this instead of your other pieces. You did something that touches people's hearts and I personally do like drawing and artwork that are rough around the edges, the raw state is sometimes more interesting than a polished product.

I love the picture that you depicted as the one and only Great Britain-or Ms. Sovereign Britannia herself! Wait a minute, this brings me one question-How come the anime Code Geass has mention the name Britannia(and shown many times) that is based on the similiar real world concept, and yet the characters in the show doesn't speak the British accent? That's very weird...but great job of the artwork though! Very moving indeed!!
As the one of the old British sayings-"Rule Britannia!!!"

I know! In the alternative CG History, Britain is invaded by Napoleon, so the British royal family flee to Canada, as do a large section of the British population, where they settle, they then invade the US and use their colonies to invade other places. Simply because they have lived in North America for 200 years (and so have lost the accent) is the reason.
Or maybe it's deliberate by the producers, Britannia in CG was based on the Holy Roman Empire, eg HRE didn't control Rome and Britannia doesn't control G.B. and so they didn't want British accents, like the Holy Romans didn't have Italian accents

Uhm, I guess you'd have to ask the creators of Code Geass (or, well, the translators I suppose?), because I have absolutely no clue.

Well I'm sorry to hear that you're not pleased with this picture, and I understand that you would want to not have all the attention for it being a lure for British patriots, like myself, but I like how you drew the island and Brittania herself, and I'm an Imperialist, I'm rather disappointed with this modern era where no one can have an Empire without the rest of the world staring down upon us

Well, I'll be happy to concede that the British Empire, faults and all, was a better sight than some other empires that could be named.

Daniel-Gleebits In reply to Bjerg [2008-02-19 04:32:37 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps, I know there are some who saw it as an oppressive, murderous system of the old Imperial Age, but then, some of this is needed for the foundation of an Empire, at least we weren't as revoltingly oppressive as the Nazis, Napoleon or the any of those other famous slaughtering Empires.
You know I find that quite a few people don't even know that there was a British Empire

Bjerg In reply to Daniel-Gleebits [2008-02-24 03:12:23 +0000 UTC]
I don't know about NECCESARY opression, but certainly empires bring things both bad and good with them, in varying degrees. As does most everything.
π: 0 β©: 1
Daniel-Gleebits In reply to Bjerg [2008-02-24 04:24:11 +0000 UTC]
Well what I mean by neccassary opression is the amount and degree of limitations the mother country must place upon its colonies or satallite states in order to keep a moderate amount of sovrenty needed to keep the Empire intact

This was a comission.
I understand the Irish division perfectly well, but that's not what I was paid to depict.
If you then want to call that ignorant, imperialist, insensitive, or what have you, well, that's fair - but you'll have to take that up with the man who requested the work and not with me.

Frizelle In reply to Bjerg [2007-10-12 12:05:06 +0000 UTC]
My comment was in no way an attack on you, a simple 'it's what I was paid to depict' would have sufficed. If you enable constructive criticism on your work you should expect to get it. If you had explained your knowledge of said 'division' in your comment on this piece I would not have mentioned it.
