Well, for starters: bobbie-the-jean.deviantart.com⦠You might find some useful advice in there. But if I could give you one big important tip, it is to study light. Try and consider how light behaves when it hits objects. That's not an easy task and the bottom line is that you will need to work at it. But the trick to it is understanding light. If you can get a grasp on that, it's all cream cheese.

okay, this is gonna sound weird but bear with me;
My Little Pony kinda scares me.
Not the characters themselves, but something about the whole premise seems off somehow.
I've never seen the show, but what little I have been told and read kinda makes it look like the main character is a complete and total Mary-Sue.
I know I'm a bit of a conspiracy nut, but I just plain don't like it.
That said,Β I LOVE what you did with their eyes in this piece. Positively adorable!

Nu. You're not a conspiracy nut at all. There is a pretty big debate going on as to whether or not Twilight Sparkle is a Mary Sue or not. It seems to have really kicked off since she got her wings. I might add my two cents to the debate. TIME FER SHUM RESERCHINS!

Twilight Sparkle is not really a Mary Sue. She is intelligent, great-hearted and an extremely powerful magician (especially for her young age), yes. But she's also socially inexperienced and a bit bookish, and prone to both thinking she knows better than anyone else and to neurotic perfectionism. She's a surprisingly nuanced character, really, and although she is the primary protagonist and default leader, she doesn't overshadow or outshine her friends who have their own goals and talents and flaws.
It's very much worth checking out; you may end up not liking the show anyway, but at least your dislike will be informed.

That is actuallyΒ a strong part of my argument though;
EVERYBODY loves her for being powerful, cute, awkward and inexperienced.
The only people who don't are badguys. In fact, NOT liking her is a sure sign that someone IS a badguy.
Even now, you could be considered "white knighting" her.
All her friends love her and have absolutely no shame or jealousy of her wonderfulness-- it's not like they think they can measure up. They LOVE serving under her. Because she's so awesome she gets wings AND a horn. And a castle. And a pet dragon. And constant personal audience with their resident deities. And gets to be a "princess" (MAN I hate that word...).
I hope you're right though, and I really hope the writers give more depth to the goals and talents of the rest of the characters.

Oh, they do. Twilight does sound kind of Mary Sueish when described like that, but things are a lot more nuanced in the show, and her friends totally don't get a short shrift!
