This is sooooo fuzzy and cuddly and cute and and and ... *gasp* *falls over from all the cuteness*

I hear ya regarding Vue. It's awfully expensive, especially when you buy all the modules for the various objects such as plants and rocks. I once toyed around with the free version, though that one has an awfully ugly watermark all over the renderings...

Have you ever considered Daz3D's Carrara 8.5? That's what I am working with. I love it, since it is an "all in one" tool. Compatible also with Daz Studio and Poser stuff. It can import a lot of 3D Formats.
It's a  Modeler, Assembler, Textures/Shaders, Hair (Dynamic!), Foliage/Plants and Landscape Tool. On top of that it is also pretty Intuitive. There are also a lot of free tutorials for the more complex things.
Plus - It's not that expensive (Below $350 I think and even cheaper for Daz Club Members).
It also got a connector to ZBrush. Called GoZ.

Oh wow. I didn't know Carrara had a go-z option. That's nifty. I might have to give it a looksee. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm always looking for new tools to work with, though, learning new software can be a pain. XD

Rhian-Skyblade In reply to BJPentecost [2016-04-07 16:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Carrara is really fairly easy to learn. It was my second semi-professional tool I started my 3D hobby with. It's imho even easier to learn and handle than Poser Pro or DazStudio.

It is also a very tidy and well sorted tool. The menu is sleek and not clunky at all. The assembly, shader/texturing and modeler room are separated "rooms", so  don't have to dig through endless menus searching for something.

The community is mature, friendly and there are some really cool guys who make free or cheap plugins. Fennec, Dartanbeck, WetCircuit :3 all cool people.

Sadly it is a heavily underestimated tool, as well, because Daz3D  does not really put a lot devs on it's advancement. That what is there is slow... sadly... :-/ they advertise their silly DazStudio-Puppet-House so much that most people ignore Carrara or are even too scared to use it. They don't even know that Carrara can do a lot cool stuff.

Thanks for the info. I actually considered making models for Poser at one point but my mentor kinda flaked out on me. :\ I think she was pissed because I was a noob and could not deal with UVs inside of Zbrush. Shame. I would really have liked to get into making stuff for Poser.

Cornucopia3d.com is having a contest - top prize is Vue Infinite. You can use the free version to enter.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BJPentecost In reply to PeggyWalters [2016-04-01 21:45:22 +0000 UTC]

The problem with the free version is that you have to purchase stuff from the store because you can't import anything otherwise. At least that's the way it was last I checked it out. I doubt I'd win anyway. XC I think I've won maybe like... one contest in my life... ever. Thanks for the info though. I'll check it out anyway. Couldn't hurt.

Vue Pioneer is free   You can upgrade it by buying modules - that's how I got back into it
VRay is delicious but horribly expensive - I used to be part of the beta program using it with Blender and it was amazing.  Too much for me to justify though

You Gog is very cute but I imagine it could be a right little monster given half a chance

BJPentecost In reply to FrankT [2016-04-01 19:10:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

If I had an unlimited budget and could justify the expense, I'd 1000% get my hands on Vray and Vue... and probably a better rig. XD Don't get me wrong, the one I have now is pretty damn good but it's starting to get a bit outdated. ATM I'm looking at Toolbag Marmoset. It looks pretty spiffy and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

FrankT In reply to BJPentecost [2016-04-01 19:36:00 +0000 UTC]

Looks interesting! I may have to have a play with that.  I was using Corona for a while in 3DS Max and that was a pretty tidy render engine.  I managed to get an educational license of the latest version which surprised me a bit!
I could do with a better rig as well - I have a feeling this one is on its way out but hey!

illyuu In reply to BJPentecost [2016-04-03 00:48:40 +0000 UTC]

I don't hate it, I used to have to use when I didn't have Paint tool SAI, but I guess I just don't like having stabilizer. xD I guess I'm just not that 'advanced'. So, I don't hate it, I'm just not ready for it yet.
