Actually, it doesn't bleed a lot when you pierce the flesh... I've never done it myself, but I was there when I friend of mine did. Almost no blood. It's still pretty disturbing, though...

I've experienced a lot of them. Everyone is different. Some people start bleeding not too long after it's just pierced, others barely bleed at all the entire time. Flesh pulls or suspensions. Both are beautiful to experience.

Yeah, that's true, it depends a lot on who is being pierced Well, I'd love to experience suspension, it's both beautiful and impressive, and scary. I'd like to know how painful it is
(I guess everyone has a different reaction to the pain, too... I've never had any problem with bearing the pain of a tattoo or a piercing, or even a branding, but this looks like it hurts like hell.)

Isnt this self harm? I thought this was against DA policy?

Mollinda In reply to Moose-sama [2010-12-22 21:31:34 +0000 UTC]
Nupe, as piercings of any kind should be done by trained professionals (and this one has obviously been expertly marked out) it's not harm - it's body modification, or performance art.

So if i get scarifications done, I can post these here?

Battledress In reply to Moose-sama [2010-12-22 23:32:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes.
You can post post scarifications. There is a specific Gallery created just for them.
Fresh and healed scarifications have been DD'd in the past.
I advise MC for any fresh artwork that shows raw wounds and blood.

you think so? aren't you a mod? shouldn't you know the websites policy? I mean I know them. But they are so flawed Last time I checked ANY form of "self" harm that was real, was not ok.

Battledress In reply to Moose-sama [2010-12-22 23:23:56 +0000 UTC]
Not every GM Mod is an expert in every Gallery.
Body Art does require special knowledge of many safety concerns as Real Harm can result with an untrained person "playing around".
There is a difference between self harm and purposefully executed designed done by a trained person under sterile conditions.
This particular image would not be self harm as I think most would find it very difficult to rig a suspension on their own backs.....

Moose-sama In reply to Battledress [2010-12-22 23:36:36 +0000 UTC]
Im not saying they need to be an expert...but basic knowledge of DA policy should be...ohhh I dont know.. mandatory? for being a mod? (but I guess thts too much to ask for )
yer, body art does require special knowledge...but this site isnt very clear on its rules :I So, thats why I ask And I agree, this isn't self harm, for others were involved to assist this procedure..but the person has to be willing to do this to themselves in the first place.
Honestly, my definition of self harm, Is when you emotionally what to destroy yourself. Physically or mentally

The DD has to come from someone that Moderates that Specific Gallery.
And, there are Galleries that do require specific knowledge.
That is why specific galleries such as Body Art have their own Moderator.
So, not just any Gallery Moderator can make a DD for Body - it HAS to be made from the Body Art Gallery Moderator.
Speaking from personal experience here....
Hope that helps.
I do understand your definition of self harm. However, many of those in the Body Mod do NOT see placing artwork on their body as destruction. Yes, there is a self-destructive element.... but true Body Art is transcendence in nature.

Scarification is a grey area because anyone with a scalpel can do it. It is cutting however, done by a professional in a controlled environment, it's body art.
HOWEVER (again) I have a friend who does scarification on other people and also on herself. She is a former self harmer and got into scarification as she decided her angst should be pretty.
Grey area. If you want to upload something involving it, feel free to note ^Anmagdan who can advise you - it's her area

......Oh no you didnt...
guuuuuuuuuuuurl you obviously dont know the art of scarification. Yes anyone with a scalpel can do it IF they want to die There are special ways to do it to the skin where it dosn't damage the skin to the point were there is actual nerve damage.
I was the same way ._. and I also learned to embrace this form of expression.
I shall note ^Anmagdan Thanks mate

I know it very well thankyou As I said, you can be an expert, or you can be a nutter with a scalpel - if it looks pretty, most people aren't going to know the difference. Hence the grey area. Unless you write an essay in your artists comments, CEA aren't going to be able to tell you know everything about skin there is to know

Body mods don't really count though. It's kinda like how tattooing TECHNICALLY is self harm, i mean, you're being stabbed with a needle millions of times, but it's an art, so it sneaks under the radar.

It's most definitely real. It's called suspension piercing. I'd say look it up, but don't if you're a little squeamish.

Love this pic! It's absolutely beautiful! Did this turn into a suspension or was it just a pull?
I'm very curious about this method of modification, I've heard that it's such a powerful and spiritual experience! I've seen a suspension demo by Russ Foxx at a tattoo convention, it was amazing, I had no idea the skin was so stretchy!
Keep up the good work!

lousienne-dee In reply to Vvissia [2010-12-23 03:26:10 +0000 UTC]
Are they, are they really?
Have you talked to anyone who is on the receiving end of a hook suspension - then gone swinging like they were on a swing at the playground?
Trust me, they're not insane. I can tell you I'm insaner than they are, and I wouldn't be caught dead suspended like that.
But the question remains: why would you comment if you clearly don't like it, and have nothing constructive to say to the wonderful artist that photographed this?

Battledress In reply to Vvissia [2010-12-22 23:25:59 +0000 UTC]
Insane is a relative term.
True, Suspensions can be done for "shock value", but many are done for deeply personal reasons bordering on the spiritual.

Mollinda In reply to Vvissia [2010-12-22 21:32:53 +0000 UTC]
I think people who wear high heels are insane because when I wear them they hurt and I hate it. However most people who wear them don't mind the pain, don't feel the pain or even like the pain.
This is the same The people who have the piercings don't feel the pain, don't mind the pain or like hte pain.

Quite the judgment to make, especially if you haven't talked to anyone who participates in it (just a guess).

I saw this done once on a cowboy movie. White man falls in love with an Indian chick, and the tribe decides he had to hang like that for like an hour or so in order to get the girl. Lets just say he got the girl. Go you, go Cowboy.
