FULL VIEW PLEASE! There are patterns and filters and they look crappy in the thumbnail!OMFG, this took WAY longer than she should have. Aiya @_@. Anyway, my first fanart from my current obsession, the very, very artistic anime, Gankutsuou, and it damn well won't be my last fanart. It's so bloody good, and I tried to do this fanart in its style and, for the most part, succeeded. I hope. The series is currently being fansubbed by Anime-Kraze and Anime-Keep. I highly recommend it, they use patterns for clothing and hair and it looks downright gorgeous.
Anyway, there are some evident inking mistakes that I corrected best I could with PhotoShop, and some of the filters look kinda plain (like the arrows...but I couldn't get a decent or unique enougu texture). But I changed the outlining to gold, and did the flats on separate layers. Then magic wand, pasted into another canvas, and basically played around with the filters until I got one that was similar to the series yet not exactly the same. I'm most proud of the cuffs, gold, and hair though.
Yay, I'm alive. I have more stuff coming...just a bit lazy.
Hope you like it...I'm considering doing this for most of CGs now. Fanart and otherwise.

Yeah, it took a very long time, but I think I'm going to adopt this as my usual. Please see the anime! It's fantastic! And please, I'd love to see what you do with patterns, it wasn't my idea to begin with

First off, let it be said: I'd fave this thing ten times over, if I could.

... I'm not even sure where to begin. One of the first things I noticed and continue to be baffled about is the different colour line-art. It really draws attention into concentrated detail, like the contrasting filters and patterns to the 'flat' spaces. I'm not sure if what I said just makes any sense, but for example: his suit versus his tie. Simply said: gorgeous. You've exploited every faction of the colour theory here to perfection, including that stylized design that's uniquely yours. Very, very, well done.
I'ma haveta try this out now, the different patterns/filters. I see bits and pieces of cloud filtering--which m'dear Ashley is very found of--and then some I haven't a clue about. Fascinating. ...And if this is fanart, it best be a damn good anime to get this kind of fanservice! They are to be honoured.

I can't take credit for the original idea of using different colored lineart and filters/patterns. But I certainly had a good deal of fun with it, like you did with the "She's Your Cocaine." But damn...it was so difficult at times to get the right filter for a certain area, the gold alone took about 45 minutes worth of experimenting! But I still had fun XD. And you flatter/credit me too, much, lovely!
Oh you DO have to check out Gankutsuou, the entire animation actually used patterns and filters, much more complex and beautiful than this humble fanart. And the backgrounds are absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, and the characters are amazing (the story is fantastic...but that's because it's based on the Count of Monte Cristo). It has inspired me a lot, and I am definitely using this style of CG with most of my art from now on (excluding my watercolors), especially since I lost my favorite colored pencils and they're no longer made ;_;.
Thank you so much for the links to the tutorial on using brushes for patterns and the lovely brush set! Tina is going to have some fuuun making more Gankutsuou fanart XD. And original...if she feels up to it >_>.

I'm sooo sick of bad anime anymore. *whimpers* Keep in mind most of my animation endeavours are limited to Adult Swim and shows I can snatch up from friends and thusly, in reality, I'm not too exposed. But I just watched this "Read or Die" thing on AS the other night, one that my anime-freak-friend loved as a manga, and damn near engaged in mass murder. Not only did the storyline suck (all the bullshit, "library agents" *grumbles*), but the artwork was horrid as well! I kept flippin' between channels, wouldn't watch the show for like, ten minutes--and come back to it and still know what's goin' on! *claws out eyes* Dear Gods! Look at what you have subjected me to! ;_; So yesh, I'm rather content anymore to read my Priest, watch my Hellsing & still drool over Cowboy Bebop & anything else those fiends put out. Lol. Wolf's Rain was woefully tragic, but again, I was in an angsty mood. --But anymore these shows are like, mass-produced. I occasionally get my Naruto fix (the new stuff) and simply sit and stare, even Naruto, my God Kishimoto is resorting to this bullshit. I s'pose it's what sells, but hot!damn...
Pretty soon I'ma boycott anime like I did MTV. Asswhipes.

Anywhore, artwork, lovely, smexy artwork. Let's sit and consider this originality thang, here, 'kk? Face it: Originality is no more than doin' a *really* good job on concealing one's sources. *whispers* Thane, in the beginning, was a Jack the Ripper rip-off. ;_; Nobody knows that, so ssssh. >.> She even used bayonettes. *shamed* --Anywhore, as I was saying, we all have our inspirations and we all steal ideas to recreate. For 'bout a year and a half I was re-creating Kaori Yuki, for the Love of the Gods! So yes, take credit. I'd love to see these new techniques be adopted into your own style. It's smexy.

That's why I get all my anime fix from stuff that isn't shown over and over on TV. Haibane Renmei is an awesomely charming anime series, that depicts the "slice of life" of Haibane, angels with small halos and small wings. I think you'd be absolutely astounded by the quality of it. Same thing with Gankutsuou, you'll be floored by how stylish and artsy it is.
